How we make TV and media units for Penge

Built-in TV and media units bring the screen, set-top boxes, speakers and cables together in one piece of furniture. The wall is planned as a whole, rather than a stand with wires trailing behind it. For a living room in Penge, the first step is a design visit to measure up and look at your equipment. If your home has boxes and consoles on the floor and a TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Solid brick external walls are standard in Victorian and Edwardian houses, while the walls inside can be brick or lath and plaster. With so many homes around Penge built before 1919, we check which you have before deciding how TV and media units are fixed. Lath and plaster in particular needs fixings chosen for it.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting often suits units in older houses. You choose the colour.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF has no grain to show through, so a painted TV unit looks calm and even. We use the moisture-resistant grade.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Standalone TV units cost less and arrive quickly. It is also easy to replace a stand when your equipment changes. A built-in unit is planned for your room and your equipment. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Each side can be made to its own size.

We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.

Common questions about TV and media units

My house in Penge is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Do you cover homes near Penge West station?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

How long will the fitting take?

The fitting depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

We plan the route in at the measuring visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

How is the price worked out?

Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.

Do you move sockets for a TV unit?

That’s a job for your electrician. Ideally it’s done before fitting.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.

From workshop to your room

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and your equipment, including the size of the screen.
  2. We visit to measure the wall and talk through the design. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, so it helps to have them in mind early.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the unit, ready for you to check.
  4. The unit is made in our workshop, with openings for cables and air.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the cable routes ready to use.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Arranging a design visit

You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Advice

When you need someone else

Not everything around TV and media units is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Installing aerials, satellite dishes or broadband
  • Structural changes to the wall
  • Painting the walls and ceiling

Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Living-room carpentry in Penge: local notes

About 47% of the homes in the streets around Penge went up before 1919, and about 20% between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 12 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Penge. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. About 41% of households in the area around Penge live in purpose-built flats, based on Census 2021. For a flat, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St John the Evangelist, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Near listed buildings like The White House, under half a mile north-east of the centre of Penge, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. The wider area includes historic houses such as Kingswood House, about 1.4 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
