Made-to-measure kitchens in Sanderstead

About 39% of the homes in the streets around Sanderstead went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 31% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how kitchens are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Sanderstead, Historic England’s list includes Church of All Saints (Grade I), under half a mile east, and The White House (Grade II), less than half a mile east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your street in Sanderstead joins a main road, it’s worth telling us at the measuring visit. We will plan where the van can stop.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Addington Palace, about 2.3 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. For families living near Gresham Primary School, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier.

Sanderstead is about 5 miles north of Thornton Heath, in the London Borough of Croydon. Anywhere in Sanderstead, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a quote in writing, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Sanderstead is one of the places in Croydon where we make bespoke kitchens, and the borough has 32 places on our list.

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Sanderstead

We are carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets, while other trades handle the services. Plumbing is done by your plumber, gas by a Gas Safe engineer and electrics by your electrician, so the design allows for pipes, cables and connections. People typically come to us about more storage in a small kitchen and a painted dresser for the kitchen; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Sanderstead, the walls are often straighter than in a Victorian house, but they’re still measured carefully. Each cabinet is levelled and scribed on site. Gas work is for a Gas Safe engineer, and the plumbing and electrics are for your plumber and electrician.

The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in Sanderstead

I live near Riddlesdown station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can you make bespoke kitchens for a home in Sanderstead?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London, and Sanderstead is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

Getting it in is planned at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

How long will the kitchen take to fit?

It depends on the kitchen. How long fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you can plan your other trades around it.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, but it is useful to be around at the end.

How fitting day works

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it’s worth mentioning at the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. First, you let us know about the room. Say a little about the way you cook.
  2. The design visit covers measuring and planning the layout.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop.
  5. We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics.

Before fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Getting a quote

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Advice

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

Is bespoke worth it?

There is a place for both. If the room is square and the budget is tight, a ready-made kitchen may do the job. For period homes, tricky rooms or a painted look, bespoke tends to earn its place. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Why us?

  • A design visit, then a written quote
  • Built around your room
  • Saturday work by arrangement
  • Workshop-made and fitted by us

Where other trades come in

Not everything around bespoke kitchens is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Gas work, which is for a Gas Safe engineer
  • Wiring for appliances and lights
  • Plastering, tiling or decorating

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Larders and dressers
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Islands where space allows
  • Hand-painted finish

The problems bespoke kitchens solve

A painted kitchen can be refreshed later, which suits a long-term home. Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch up later on.

People usually get in touch with us about things like these:

  • A pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers
  • A painted kitchen in a colour you choose
  • Spaces sized for your oven and fridge
  • A kitchen for a room that is not square

For a flat near Riddlesdown station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
