What it costs
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it.
Getting in touch
Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- What the furniture needs to hold
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
Bespoke kitchens for homes in South Croydon
A kitchen needs other trades as well as a carpenter. Your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics, so the design allows for pipes, cables and connections. If your home has open shelves with cupboards below and cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls, that’s what kitchens are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
In a period terrace, the front door, hall and any turn into the kitchen limit the size of each piece. A large share of the homes around South Croydon date from before 1919, so the route to the kitchen is measured at the design visit. Long runs arrive in sections and are joined in place, with the joins placed where they will not show.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the kitchen we have designed for the room, what it is made from and how it’s finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Made-to-measure kitchens or ready-made?
Ready-made cabinets often have chipboard carcasses. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, painted in colours you choose, so the finish can be repainted later. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

How fitting day works
Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that is your finish, can follow the fitting.
- You tell us about the kitchen and where it is in your home.
- At the design visit we measure the kitchen and the route in, including stairs, doorways and any lift.
- We send a written quote.
- In our workshop we build the kitchen from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in pieces that suit the route in.
- The cabinets are fitted in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish; plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
How to get a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Advice
Do you need bespoke kitchens in South Croydon?
Older kitchens often lack storage. Larders, tall cupboards and deep drawers can hold much more without crowding the room.
Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:
- A painted dresser for the kitchen
- A central island in a larger kitchen
- A kitchen planned around your appliances
- A kitchen for a room that is not square
Addington Palace, about 2.4 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true.
Choosing a carpenter
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
Bespoke kitchens in South Croydon: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around South Croydon were built before 1919 (about 52%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 17%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. 3 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of South Croydon. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. Where a home in South Croydon is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that at the measuring visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
Living in a block of flats near Sanderstead station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Augustine, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Common questions about bespoke kitchens
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Sanderstead station?
Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Is South Croydon in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?
Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London, and South Croydon is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.
Will a bespoke kitchen suit my uneven floor?
Yes. We scribe each cabinet to the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth, to give a level line for the worktop. It is one of the main reasons people choose bespoke in an older house.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.
Can you build an island in my kitchen?
If there is enough room, yes. There has to be comfortable space on every side, and we measure for it at the design visit. In a narrow kitchen, a longer run or a peninsula may suit better.
