Bespoke kitchens in Croydon: how it works
A bespoke kitchen is built around the room you have. Every unit is sized from careful measurements taken during the design visit, so the runs fit neatly from wall to wall. The layout, storage and finish are planned with you before anything is made in our workshop. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about an island where space allows and making the most of a galley kitchen.
Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard.
- You contact us about a bespoke kitchen.
- We visit to measure and discuss the layout and the finish, spray-painted or hand-painted.
- Your written quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
- The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, and a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
- We fit the cabinets in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied on site and is easy to touch up later.
- Treat new paint gently while it cures; the plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your own plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician.
What goes into your quote
Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Tell us about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.

Local landmarks in Thornton Heath
Our area takes in the homes around Prince George pub, Norbury Manor Business and Enterprise College for Girls and The Archbishop Lanfranc School, among other places. Also close by are Winterbourne Junior Girls' School (within half a mile west), Grangewood Park (0.8 miles east) and Church of St Stephen (a few minutes’ walk west). There’s a railway station in Thornton Heath itself: Thornton Heath station. Other landmarks nearby include Crystal Palace Museum (1.9 miles north-east) and Centrale Croydon (1.7 miles south). Not far away are Biggin Wood.
Kitchens across Croydon
Homes across Croydon range from period terraces to post-war blocks and newer flats, and each brings its own kind of kitchen. Each cabinet is levelled and scribed on site. Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood keep the cabinets stable.
In Croydon, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 29%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 24%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Of the 32 places we have local pages for in Croydon, 6 have their centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission.
Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs, so a van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges. Let us know about parking at the design visit.
Thornton Heath: The wider area includes historic houses such as Kingswood House, about 2.4 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. If you live in a flat close to Thornton Heath station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.
When you need someone else
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:
- Electrics, sockets and lighting (your electrician)
- Moving water or waste pipes
- Gas work, which is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register
What affects the price in Croydon
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- How square the room is
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Parking near your home
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.
What to send when you get in touch
A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- How you want to use the space
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Your postcode and the borough
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.
Boards, parts and paint
Spray-painted finish
We spray paint in the workshop for a smooth, factory-like finish.
Hand-painted finish
Some people like the character of a hand-painted kitchen in an older home.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Neither choice is right for every home. If the room is square and the budget is tight, a ready-made kitchen may do the job. For period homes, awkward rooms or a painted look, bespoke tends to earn its place.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
Questions from Croydon
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Does my lease affect fitted furniture?
Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we can’t advise on it.
Do you work outside London?
No. Our work is in London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.
Can I send photos before the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you get in touch through our contact form.
Do you make good the walls afterwards?
No. We don’t plaster or decorate. The furniture is finished by spray or by hand, as agreed in your quote.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
Getting it in is planned during the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.
