Fitted wardrobes in South Norwood: what you get

A fitted wardrobe is built into the room itself, running floor to ceiling and wall to wall where that suits the room. That leaves no gap above to gather dust and no wasted space at the sides. If you’re planning fitted wardrobes in South Norwood, the first step is a design visit to measure up and go through the design. People typically come to us about a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use and several odd pieces where one run of storage would do, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

If your bedroom is in a period house, expect uneven walls and tall ceilings; in a newer flat, expect plasterboard and a lower ceiling. A home in South Norwood might be either, or neither. We scribe, level and fix to suit whichever you have. The height of the room decides how tall the pieces can be.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Is it time for fitted wardrobes?

A spare room turning into a guest room or a child’s room is another reason. Built-in storage makes the room work for its new role without crowding the floor. Inside, the layout can change as needs change.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • A sloping ceiling that is hard to use
  • Too little room for clothes

For a flat near Norwood Junction station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Will the quote be in writing?

Questions from South Norwood

How do you fit fitted wardrobes in a flat in South Norwood?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?

Yes. A common layout is tall cupboards either side of the bed and storage above the headboard. It is planned so there is room around the bed and the room doesn’t feel enclosed.

How long does it take to fit wardrobes?

The fitting depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

How is the price worked out?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. You’ll get a quote in writing once we’ve measured up.

Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?

That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense. We look at it with you when we measure.

When is bespoke worth it?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes

What you pay depends on:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

Getting in touch

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Fitting day, step by step

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means joining the sections, fitting them to the walls and setting them level. The fixings suit whatever the walls are made of. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
  2. We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish.
  4. The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

Ask for a quote

To make a start, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Advice

Fitted bedroom furniture in South Norwood

Homes built before 1919 make up about 41% of the housing in the streets around South Norwood, with about 17% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Within a mile of the centre of South Norwood, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Croydon included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in South Norwood, as it does anywhere else in London. Access and parking are talked through at the measuring visit.

For an older house near Church of St Mark, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. If you live near South Norwood Recreation Ground, fitted wardrobes are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

South Norwood is about 1 mile west of Thornton Heath, within the London Borough of Croydon. Why bespoke in South Norwood?

Under a sloping ceiling, standard wardrobes leave most of the space unused. A bespoke wardrobe can be shaped to follow the slope. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in set sizes, and real rooms rarely match them, which leaves gaps at the sides and wasted space on top. Fitted furniture is made to the room.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
