About our bespoke kitchens in Old Town

Some kitchens suit a dresser, with cupboards below and open shelves above, and in a period house it can look as if it has always been there. We make dressers to fit the wall they stand against, scribed to follow it and painted to suit the room. People typically come to us about a kitchen island with room around it and a kitchen for a room that isn’t square; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In many homes built since 2000, the kitchen runs along one wall of the living space. Around Old Town, many homes date from 2000 onwards, so tall cupboards and wall cabinets to the ceiling are worth considering. You choose the worktop, sink and appliances, built into a run made for the wall.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Flats, leases and landlords

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it during the design visit.

Made-to-measure kitchens in Old Town

About 42% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Old Town went up since 2000, and about 31% before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Within a mile of the centre of Old Town, 6 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. About 42% of homes in the area around Old Town were built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Newer homes usually have open-plan kitchens with plasterboard walls, so the cabinet fixings are chosen for the board.

If your home is one of the older houses near Croydon Minster, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. Addington Palace, about 3 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. Living in a block of flats near West Croydon station? Then it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

What bespoke kitchens can’t fix

We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Any work on the gas supply
  • Wiring for appliances and lights
  • Building work, like removing walls

Not sure whether your space suits bespoke kitchens? You can use our contact form and we will tell you. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Islands where space allows
  • Spray-painted finish

How fitting day works

You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Kitchens are made in sections sized for the lift and doors.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the kitchen.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through the layout, larder, dresser or island.
  3. You receive a written quote.
  4. The kitchen is made at our workshop.
  5. The cabinets are fitted in your home, with plumbing, gas and electrics by your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician. It helps to have those trades booked in good time.

How to prepare

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Advice

Questions from Old Town

Is Old Town in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?

Yes, Old Town is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Croydon and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Old Town?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Can I choose my own worktop and appliances?

The cabinets are designed for the worktop, sink and appliances you have picked. Knowing their sizes early helps, and the quote confirms what’s included.

How are bespoke kitchens priced?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, layout and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, use our contact form.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.

Tips worth knowing

These points come up often when people plan bespoke kitchens. They help before and after fitting:

  • Think about how you cook and what you store
  • Allow space to walk round an island
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Choose your appliances before the design is final

Use the cooker hood or open a window when cooking, to keep steam off the cabinets. Ventilation helps the whole kitchen.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before changing the kitchen. We cannot advise on your lease.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
