Turnpike Lane Fitted Home Offices

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make fitted home offices for homes in Turnpike Lane, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • A spare room that has to be an office and a guest room
  • Work things on show in the evening
  • A tangle of chargers and leads

Questions from Turnpike Lane

Is parking a problem for fitting in Turnpike Lane?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.

I live near Hornsey station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Haringey and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

How long does it take to fit a home office?

The time the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Because everything is made in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We work tidily and keep the room as clear as we can.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

Getting it in is planned at the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

Do you wire in sockets for the home office?

We do not do electrical work, so sockets are for your electrician. We design the desk with cable routes and leave room where sockets will go. It is useful to agree the positions at the measuring visit.

Fitted home offices in Turnpike Lane: what you get

A good home office has a place for everything. Drawers for stationery, cupboards for files and a printer, and shelves for books and folders, so the desk stays clear. Doors can hide the working things when you’re done. For a home in Turnpike Lane, we design it all around what you need to store. Most enquiries start with an alcove or landing that could take a desk and no way to put work away, and the answer is made at our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Victorian and Edwardian rooms often have fewer sockets than a modern office needs, so we plan cable routes to the sockets you have. Any new sockets are for your electrician, ideally before fitting day. Since a large share of homes around Turnpike Lane date from before 1919, it’s a common thing to plan for.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Built-in desks and shelving in Turnpike Lane

Homes built before 1919 make up about 66% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Turnpike Lane, with about 15% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Turnpike Lane, 9 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. We can then plan where the van will stop.

Bruce Castle, about 1.5 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. If you live near Ducketts Common, a desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight.

Turnpike Lane is in the London Borough of Haringey, about 2 miles east of Tottenham. Design visits and fitting in Turnpike Lane can be on a Saturday, by arrangement. Turnpike Lane is one of the places in Haringey where we make fitted home offices, and the borough has 23 places on our list.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Do you need fitted home offices in Turnpike Lane?

Trailing cables are one of the things people most want to sort. Planned routes through the desk keep cables out of sight. Any new sockets are for your electrician, and we design around them.

Requests we hear often include:

  • No way to put work away
  • An alcove or landing that could take a desk
  • Shelving that bows under the load
  • A spare room that has to be an office and a guest room

If you live in a flat close to Hornsey station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where

How fitting day works

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. It starts when you contact us about a home office.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the room, the window and your equipment, and plan where the cables will run.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed. You can ask us about any part of it.
  4. We make the desk, shelves and cupboards in our workshop.
  5. The office is fitted and set level, ready for your first day at the desk.

How to prepare

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Arranging a design visit

Advice

Caring for painted furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Decide how much should be open shelving and how much behind doors
  • Consider your chair when planning the desk
  • Note how many files and books you need to store
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls

Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched in. It’s worth keeping a record of the paint colour. Should you have a question about the office, tell us about the room on our contact form and we will help.

Keep cables in their routes rather than pulled across the desk. Tight cables can mark edges over time. A little tidying now and then keeps the office calm.

What affects the price in Turnpike Lane

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:

  • Parking near your home
  • The width and height of the space
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The number of doors and drawers

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What we need to know

These details help when you contact us:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
