Kitchens in Underhill: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 24% of the housing in the area around Underhill, with about 24% built between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Underhill include Church of St John the Baptist (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles north-west, and Odeon Cinema (Grade II), under half a mile east. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your street in Underhill joins a main road, it is worth telling us at the measuring visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

For a flat near New Barnet station, kitchens are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If your home is one of the older houses near St John the Baptist Church, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. For a family home near St Catherine's RC School, planning a kitchen around family routines, with a place for school things, pays off.

Underhill is about 3 miles south of Finchley, within the London Borough of Barnet. Design visits and fitting in Underhill can be on a Saturday, by prior arrangement. Our work takes in places right across Barnet, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

In EN5 and N20, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Streets in the area include Park Road, May's Lane and Manor Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for bespoke kitchens. We also cover the places around Underhill: Barnet (1 mile east), New Barnet (1 mile east), Monken Hadley (1 mile north), Hadley Wood (1 mile north-east) and Cockfosters (2 miles east). Elsewhere in Barnet, we also cover Finchley (3 miles south), Burnt Oak (4 miles south-west), East Finchley (4 miles south), Hendon (4 miles south), Whetstone (2 miles south-east) and Edgware (4 miles south-west).

Bespoke kitchens in Underhill: what you get

We are carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets, while other trades handle the services. Your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics, and we plan the cabinets around where their work goes. If you are living with a dresser that suits a period house and an island where space allows, kitchens made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, floors, walls and ceilings vary from one home to the next. Every cabinet is levelled and scribed so the lines run straight. Moisture-resistant MDF suits a kitchen, and the finish is agreed in your quote.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

What we do not do

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • New sockets or circuits
  • Structural changes to the room
  • Painting the walls around the kitchen

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

What happens on fitting day

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the room and the kitchen you have in mind is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the layout, the storage and where the appliances will sit.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the kitchen cabinets. Plumbing, gas and electrics are not part of it: those are for your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician.
  4. We build the cabinets, doors and drawer fronts in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinets go in, scribed and set level, ready for your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer to do their part.

Before fitting day

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

How to get a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a quote in writing. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Could you do it yourself?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Why bespoke in Underhill?

Ready-made units are made to fixed sizes, so most layouts end in a filler panel. Bespoke cabinets are made to the room’s real sizes, so the runs can fill the space properly. Standard widths and heights seldom suit an actual room, so it leaves gaps at the ends and empty space above. Built-in pieces fill the space they’re made for.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it during the design visit.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

FAQs: bespoke kitchens in Underhill

Can you fit furniture in a home close to New Barnet station?

Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Underhill?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.

Do you handle the gas and electrics for the kitchen?

No, that work is for other trades. Your plumber connects the sink and dishwasher, a Gas Safe engineer handles any gas, and your electrician does the wiring, while we make and fit the cabinets.

How much does a bespoke kitchen cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A small galley and a large kitchen with a larder and island are very different jobs, so we quote once we’ve measured. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Which worktops and appliances can I have?

The worktop, sink and appliances are the ones you choose, and we design the cabinets around them. Your quote sets out what’s included.
