From workshop to your room
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.
- You tell us about the room and how you use it.
- At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the layout.
- A quote follows, covering the design and finish.
- We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: we fit the cabinets, and your plumber, electrician and an engineer on the Gas Safe Register handle the services. We don’t arrange these trades ourselves.
Before fitting day
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
How to get a quote
Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. To send them, use our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Bespoke kitchens in Finchley
We make kitchens for homes in Finchley and across London. It starts with a design visit to measure and go through the layout, then a written quote. The cabinets are built in our workshop and fitted in your home. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days, so you can plan around it. People normally come to us about a dresser that suits a period house and spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
In a period terrace, the front door, hall and any turn into the kitchen limit the size of each piece. Around Finchley, a large share of homes were built before 1919, so we measure the route to the kitchen along with the room itself. Long runs arrive in sections and are joined in place, with the joins placed where they will not show.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Tips worth knowing
Getting the most from bespoke kitchens starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Know your appliance sizes early
- Make a note of what you use every day
- Deal with damp walls first
- Wipe up spills promptly
Do not leave water sitting on painted cabinets, particularly near the sink. Moisture-resistant MDF copes well, but standing water is best avoided.
Measure the route into the kitchen along with the room itself. We make the cabinets in sections that fit through the doors and up the stairs, so let us know about any narrow spots.
What bespoke kitchens cannot fix
We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:
- Painting the walls around the kitchen
- Moving water or waste pipes
- Wiring for appliances and lights
If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.
Questions we’re often asked
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Finchley?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Do you cover homes near New Southgate station?
Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Will you connect the sink and appliances?
No, that work is for other trades. Your plumber connects the sink and dishwasher, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register handles any gas, and your electrician does the wiring, and we fit the cabinets.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character.
How much time does fitting need?
How long fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.
Bespoke kitchens in Finchley: local notes
In the neighbourhood around Finchley, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 17%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Finchley include The Manor House (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south-west, and Villa at the Convent of the Good Shepherd (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. The share of homes built before 1919 around Finchley, about 47%, is well above the figure for Barnet as a whole, about 20%, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of kitchens.
For a flat near New Southgate station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. For an older house near St Paul's Finchley, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. The wider area includes historic houses such as Heath Hall, about 1.8 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Off-the-shelf kitchens are quicker to buy and normally cost less, and in a square modern room they can work well. Where walls lean and floors slope, they can be hard to fit neatly. A bespoke kitchen costs more but is made for the room. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it cannot tip, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.
