Built-in bookshelves in Aldborough Hatch: what you get

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves help brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing as your books change. A mix often works best so the bookcase stays rigid and you keep some flexibility. Typical reasons to get in touch are books with nowhere left to go and a home library or study, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In a semi from the 1920s or 1930s, the front room typically has a bay at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall. Interwar, semi-detached and detached houses make up a big part of the housing around Aldborough Hatch, so that layout is worth knowing well. We tend to plan built-in bookshelves along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

How fitting day works

You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed during the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are typically straightforward, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. Built-in bookshelves arrive in sections and are assembled in place.

  1. You tell us about your books and the wall you have in mind.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with the shelf spans in mind.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote. Read it through and ask us anything.
  4. We then make the bookcase in our workshop, with shelves thick enough for their span.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted in your home, ready for your books.

How to prepare

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

How to get a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

Questions we’re often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Aldborough Hatch?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Aldborough Hatch?

Yes, Aldborough Hatch is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Redbridge and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

The furniture is built in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. At the design visit, we measure the route along with the room itself.

Can bookshelves go around a door?

Yes. We can build shelving either side of a door or window with shelves above it. It uses wall space that is often left bare, and a window can have a seat or desk beneath.

When is bespoke worth it?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Living-room carpentry in Aldborough Hatch: local notes

About 46% of the homes in the streets around Aldborough Hatch went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 20% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Aldborough Hatch, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Peter (Grade II), under half a mile north, and Aldborough Hatch Chapel (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. About 37% of households in the neighbourhood around Aldborough Hatch live in terraced houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Many London terraces have a chimney breast and alcoves in the main rooms, which suit built-in bookshelves built to their exact widths.

Valentines Mansion, about 1.6 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If your children go to William Torbitt Primary School or a school nearby, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

What prompts built-in bookshelves in Aldborough Hatch

For people who work from home, the wall behind the desk matters. Shelving close to the desk keeps books and files within reach. Cupboards underneath hide printers, paper and clutter.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • Shelves that sag under books
  • Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste
  • Shelves that suit a period room
  • Books piled on the floor

Where other trades come in

Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Relocating radiators or pipework
  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
  • Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
