About our bespoke kitchens in Aldborough Hatch

Some kitchens suit a dresser, with cupboards below and open shelves above, and in a period house it can look as if it has always been there. We make dressers to fit the wall they stand against and finished to match the rest of the kitchen. We make kitchens from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about open shelves with cupboards below and spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets.

An island needs space around it to work, and not every kitchen has that. Around Aldborough Hatch, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, and in an extended kitchen there may be space. The space around any island is measured during the design visit, along with where water and power would need to reach. Your plumber and electrician run any services to it.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Looking after your furniture

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Check stairs, hallways and lifts for access
  • Make a note of what you use every day
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first

Hand-painted kitchens are easy to touch up. A spray finish gives a smooth, even surface that wipes clean. It’s worth keeping a record of the colours used.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before changing the kitchen. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.

How fitting day works

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know during the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the room and the kitchen you have in mind is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and plan the cabinets around the worktop, sink and appliances you choose.
  3. A written quote follows for the cabinets, materials and finish. Plumbing, gas and electrics aren’t part of it: those are for your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician.
  4. We build the cabinets, doors and drawer fronts in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home, working around your plumber, your electrician and a Gas Safe engineer.

How to prepare

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Empty the space we will be working in

Arranging a design visit

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

Can you make bespoke kitchens for a home in Aldborough Hatch?

Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London, and Aldborough Hatch is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

I live near Goodmayes station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Redbridge and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us.

What are the kitchen cabinets made of?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Can you build an island in my kitchen?

Where space allows, yes. An island needs clear floor around it to open doors and move about, and we measure for it during the design visit. In a narrow kitchen, a longer run or a peninsula may suit better.

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 46% of the housing in the area around Aldborough Hatch, with about 20% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Aldborough Hatch, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Peter (Grade II), less than half a mile north, and Aldborough Hatch Chapel (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Terraced houses are home to about 37% of households in the area around Aldborough Hatch, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Terraced houses often have long, narrow kitchens, which suits cabinets made to the exact width.

Close to Fairlop Waters? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen. For a family home near William Torbitt Primary School, a tall cupboard by the door can take school bags and coats as part of the kitchen. The wider area includes historic houses such as Valentines Mansion, about 1.6 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standard cabinets come in set widths, so the room has to fit the units. Bespoke cabinets are made to the room’s real sizes, so the runs can fill the space properly. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

Why us?

  • We visit, measure and talk through the design before we quote
  • Built around your room
  • Workshop-made and fitted by us
  • More than 300 projects completed

Read how bespoke compares with ready-made and how to compare quotes.

What it costs

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Getting in touch

Ahead of the design visit, we will usually ask about:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote. To book one, use our contact form.
