Built-in bookshelves in Ilford
Bookshelves do not have to stop at a doorway or a window. A bookcase can wrap around a door, with shelves running over the top, or frame a window with a seat or desk below. It makes use of wall space that’s usually left bare. Most enquiries start with wasted wall space around a door or window and somewhere to keep toys and books tidy; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Victorian and Edwardian houses were built with solid brick outside walls, and internal walls may be brick or lath and plaster. With so many homes around Ilford built before 1919, we check which you have before deciding how built-in bookshelves are fixed. Lath and plaster needs a lighter touch and the right fixings, particularly behind loaded shelves.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

What built-in bookshelves cannot fix
Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Redecorating, which is for your decorator
- Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
- Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room. How it works.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Ilford
Is parking a problem for fitting in Ilford?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
My house in Ilford is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
How long are you in the house for fitting?
How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.
Should my shelves be fixed or adjustable?
It is your choice: fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing later. A mix often works best.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.
What happens on fitting day
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as we will have talked about at the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.
- To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the books and objects you want on show is plenty.
- At the design visit we measure the wall and talk through shelf spans, depths and spacing so the shelves will not sag.
- Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
- The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
- The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
How to get a quote
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, fill in our short enquiry form.

What affects the price in Ilford
To work out the quote, we look at:
- How square the room is
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- How many doors and drawers there are
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.
What we need to know
Ahead of the design visit, we’ll usually ask about:
- How you want to use the space
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it at the measuring visit.
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.
Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?
Standalone bookcases cost less and you can have them right away. You can take them to your next home. Built-in shelves stay with the house and are made for its walls, which is the trade-off. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.
The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
