TV and media units in Aldborough Hatch

A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places, behind the screen or inside a cupboard. That job is for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. Ideally it is done before the unit goes in, and we can tell you where the unit will sit. Most enquiries start with somewhere to keep games tidy and a big screen that dominates the wall, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Plenty of semis and interwar houses have been extended at the back or had the back rooms knocked through, and around Aldborough Hatch, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large share of the housing. In a long knocked-through room, TV and media units can run the full length of one wall. New plasterboard in an extension and older brick or block in the original house take different fixings.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Caring for painted furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Talk to your electrician early about sockets
  • List every box, console and speaker that needs a home
  • Let us know about access early
  • Decide where you will sit, so the screen height suits it

Cupboard doors may settle slightly with use. Hinges can typically be adjusted to line them up again.

Tag each lead at both ends to make future changes easier.

Boards, parts and paint

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, which suits doors, panels and the visible faces of a TV wall.

Birch plywood

For carcasses and drawer boxes, birch plywood is hard-wearing. Its layered edge can be painted or shown.

What happens on fitting day

You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are typically straightforward, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. TV and media units arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure up, note where the sockets are and plan how the cables will run. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.

How to prepare

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Arranging a design visit

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

  • Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Questions we are often asked

Do you make TV and media units for homes in Aldborough Hatch?

Yes, we work across Redbridge, Aldborough Hatch included, and across the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

I live near Goodmayes station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Redbridge and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room.

How do I get a quote for TV and media units in Aldborough Hatch?

Simply send us a few details through our contact form. It is useful to send rough measurements and a few pictures, and then we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Can you build a TV unit for a wall-mounted TV?

We can plan for either a wall-mounted TV or one standing on the unit. If the TV is wall-mounted, panels and shelves are arranged around the bracket and cables.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.

Living-room storage in Aldborough Hatch

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 46% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Aldborough Hatch, with about 20% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Aldborough Hatch, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Peter (Grade II), less than half a mile north, and Aldborough Hatch Chapel (Grade II), under half a mile north-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling may need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your street in Aldborough Hatch joins a main road, it’s worth telling us during the design visit. We will plan where the van can stop.

If you live near Fairlop Waters, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. Valentines Mansion, about 1.6 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. If your children go to William Torbitt Primary School or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.
