How it is made
Birch plywood
For carcasses and fixed shelves, birch plywood gives a rigid frame, and birch plywood grips its fixings well.
Shelves
Depth is set around what you keep, from shallow paperback shelves to deeper ones for records.
Built-in bookshelves for homes in Woodford
Shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves add stiffness and look solid, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing as your books change. A mix often works best. Typical reasons to get in touch are books piled on the floor and wasted wall space around a door or window, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Woodford, many homes have had the front and back rooms knocked together. The result is often a long room with a chimney breast, a good spot for built-in bookshelves. At the design visit we plan any cable routes and ventilation the room needs, with any new sockets left to your electrician.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Fitting day, step by step
With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- You contact us about shelving around a door, a window or a chimney breast.
- We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
- A quote in writing follows, with the design, materials and finish.
- The sections are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the shelving in your home, scribing the edges to follow the walls and ceiling, so there are no gaps along the sides.
- Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
How to get a quote
We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route during the design visit.
What we do not do
We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:
- Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
- Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
- Plumbing work around the shelves

Common questions about built-in bookshelves
Is parking a problem for fitting in Woodford?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Is Woodford in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?
Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London, and Woodford is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.
Should my shelves be fixed or adjustable?
They can be, and many people choose a mix. A few fixed shelves keep the bookcase rigid.
My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
That is normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
How do you decide on shelf depth?
That depends on your books. Paperbacks suit shallow shelves, while large books and records need deeper ones, so many people mix depths. We plan depths around your collection at the design visit.
Should I send photos?
Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you get in touch through our contact form.

What it costs
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- How big the furniture is
Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.
Helping us understand the room
When you contact us, these help most:
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Where you live, with the postcode
A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
