Built-in bookshelves in Nag's Head, Islington

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on built-in bookshelves in Nag's Head starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste
  • Shelves packed two rows deep
  • Room for a record collection

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Nag's Head

The right depth depends on your books. Paperbacks sit happily on shallow shelves, while art books, atlases and records need more. Deep shelves let small books disappear behind each other, while shallow ones leave large books overhanging. A common answer is deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower ones above. If your home has shelves packed two rows deep and alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A large share of the homes around Nag's Head were built before 1919, and in London most homes of that age are Victorian or Edwardian. Houses of that age normally have a chimney breast in the front and back reception rooms, with an alcove either side, and those alcoves are the natural home for built-in bookshelves. Walls are rarely flat, so each piece is scribed to the plaster and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls during the design visit.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, so it is a good choice for shelves that carry books. You can paint the edge or show the layers.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting lets you judge the colour in your own room. Joins and scribed edges are painted in the same coats.

Is it time for built-in bookshelves?

New owners of older houses often want shelving that suits the house. The alcoves beside a chimney breast are an obvious home for shelving, and fitted shelves look as though they belong.

We are often asked to help with:

  • Bare walls that could hold shelving
  • Shelving that frames a window
  • Low shelves children can reach
  • A room lined with books

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Odeon Cinema, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

What to check before you book

  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?

What happens on fitting day

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections built in our workshop come in next. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.

  1. You describe the room and what the shelves will hold.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. Once you are happy, the shelving is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted in your home, ready for your books.

How to prepare

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Ask for a quote

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.

Questions from Nag's Head

Can you fit built-in bookshelves to the uneven walls of an older house in Nag's Head?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

I live near Drayton Park station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Islington and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

How deep should bookshelves be?

We set the depth to suit what you own. Deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower shelves above is a common layout.

How is the price worked out?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

What keeps bookshelves from bowing under books?

We plan each shelf for its span, depth and load. For long runs, we use a thicker shelf, a front lip or a support. Let us know about heavy collections during the design visit.

Looking after your furniture

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Estimate how many metres of books you have
  • Plan heavy items for the lower shelves
  • Consider a mix of fixed and adjustable shelves
  • Plan any sockets or wiring with your electrician before fitting

Painted shelves feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. For the first while, place books gently rather than sliding them along.

Use mats under plants and vases on painted shelves. Dry any spills quickly.
