Built-in bookshelves in Agar Town
Built-in bookshelves in Agar Town: what you get
Shelving can frame a door or a window. We can build shelves either side of a door and bridge them over it. It uses wall space that often goes to waste. If your home has books piled on the floor and empty alcoves that could hold books, built-in bookshelves made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.
With most households around Agar Town in purpose-built flats, getting the furniture into the building matters as much as the design. Built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized to go up the stairs, into the lift and through the front door, and assembled and fitted in place. A lease can require consent before you fix furniture to the walls, so it is worth checking first.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Living-room storage in Agar Town
In the neighbourhood around Agar Town, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 36%) and the years since 2000 (about 24%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Agar Town include All Saints Greek Orthodox Church (Grade I), less than half a mile west, and Old Church of St Pancras (Grade II*), less than half a mile south. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling can require listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. So a van fitting furniture in Agar Town typically needs a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay arranged through the council. We ask about parking at the measuring visit, so the van can be planned for.
If you live in a period home close to All Saints, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. If you live in a flat close to Camden Road station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

What prompts built-in bookshelves in Agar Town
Most people come to us because the books have outgrown the shelves. Piles on the floor and double rows on the shelves are a familiar sign. A built-in bookcase uses a whole wall for far more space than a standalone bookcase.
Here’s what built-in bookshelves can help with:
- Space for art books and records
- Books with nowhere left to go
- Shelves that suit a period room
- A bare wall above a doorway
Close to Lewis Cubitt Park? Built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.
Before you choose who makes it
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
When you need someone else
Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:
- Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
- Decorating the rest of the room
If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

How fitting day works
You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about at the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. For a flat, the stairs, landings, lift and doors are measured along with the room itself: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none, which the design allows for.
- To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the books and objects you want on show is plenty.
- We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
- You get a quote in writing for the design, materials and finish.
- The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
- We fit it in your home with fixings that suit the wall, and a hand-painted finish, if you chose one, follows on site.
Before we arrive
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
Starting with a design visit
If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.
Advice
Materials and finishes
Shelves
For a long shelf, we use a thicker board, a lip on the front or a support. Shorter bays are another answer.
Birch plywood
Shelf sag depends on span, depth and load. Birch plywood helps keep long shelves flat.
How we price built-in bookshelves
Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Parking and unloading on your street
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
Getting in touch
A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- How you want to use the space
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.
FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Agar Town
Is parking a problem for fitting in Agar Town?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Camden Road station?
Yes, homes across Camden and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.
What happens when you come to measure?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Can built-in shelves be adjustable?
You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves add stiffness to the bookcase, and adjustable ones let the spacing change. Many people choose both.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
