What affects the price in Farringdon

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The internal fittings
  • How big the furniture is
  • How many doors and drawers there are

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What we need to know

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • What the furniture needs to hold

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

How we make built-in bookshelves for Farringdon

Shelving can frame a door or a window. We can build shelves either side of a door and bridge them over it, and the same works around a window with a seat beneath it. It makes use of wall space that’s usually left bare. Typical reasons to get in touch are bookcases that lean or wobble and shelving that frames a window, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Getting long pieces into a flat often takes the most planning. Since most households around Farringdon live in purpose-built flats, the sections for built-in bookshelves are planned at the design visit, with the route in measured not just the room. The joins are placed where they will not show once the furniture is fitted.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the built-in bookcase we have designed for the room, what it is made from and how it’s finished, and the workshop works from it.

How it’s made

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which makes it our usual choice for long or heavily loaded shelves. You can paint the edge or show the layers.

Spray-painted finish

A sprayed coat gets into corners and along edges and leaves no brush marks. The colour is agreed before we start.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Farringdon

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Farringdon were built since 2000 (about 32%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 28%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Farringdon, Historic England’s list includes Priory Church of St John of Jerusalem (Grade I), less than half a mile north, and The Charterhouse (Grade I), under half a mile east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. A van working in Farringdon will usually need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. Parking is worth mentioning during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Dr Johnson's House, about 0.4 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. Close to Barbican Conservatory? Built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. For an older house near St John Clerkenwell, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Tips worth knowing

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Let us know about parking and access at the measuring visit
  • Consider a mix of fixed and adjustable shelves
  • Ask your electrician about sockets early
  • Measure your tallest and deepest books

Keep a record of the colour. Hand-painted finishes are the easiest to touch up in place.

Overloading is the main cause of sagging. If you plan to add a heavy collection later, say so at the measuring visit, so the shelves can be sized for it.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Where there is no lift, each section is sized to be carried up the stairs safely. The tightest landing sets the largest piece. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed.

  1. You contact us about shelving around a door, a window or a chimney breast.
  2. We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the shelving in your home, scribing the edges to follow the walls and ceiling, so there are no gaps along the sides.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.

Getting ready for fitting day

Advice

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standalone bookcases leave gaps at the top and sides, and on a wall that isn’t straight the gaps show. Ours are scribed to the walls and can run up to the ceiling. Big standalone units don’t always fit the lift or the turn on the stairs, while fitted furniture arrives in sections sized for the route. The sections are assembled once inside.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Why us?

Questions we’re often asked

Does a conservation area in or near Farringdon affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Farringdon?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

How do you decide on shelf depth?

That depends on your books. Paperbacks need much less depth than art books or records. We plan depths around your collection at the design visit.

How long does it take to fit built-in bookshelves?

The fitting depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The making happens in our workshop.

Can built-in shelves be adjustable?

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing later. A mix often works best.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.
