Highbury Built-in Bookshelves

- A room lined with books
- Bare walls that could hold shelving
- Storage for children’s books and games

Questions from Highbury
Do you cover homes near Canonbury station?
Yes. We cover all of Islington and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room.
Is Highbury in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?
Yes, Highbury is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Islington and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.
How do I get a quote?
It is easiest to message us from the contact page. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.
Can built-in shelves be adjustable?
Some or all of them can be adjustable. A few fixed shelves keep the bookcase rigid.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.
Built-in bookshelves for homes in Highbury
Shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves help brace the bookcase, while adjustable shelves let you move the spacing later. A mix often works best. People typically come to us about bookshelves in keeping with an older house and room for a record collection; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Picture rails, deep skirting boards and plaster cornices are part of the character of older houses, and built-in bookshelves need to meet those lines neatly. A large share of the housing around Highbury went up before 1919, so mouldings are something we expect to talk about at the design visit. The top line can stop at the rail or run on to the cornice, depending on the room.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Built-in living-room furniture in Highbury
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Highbury were built before 1919 (about 50%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Highbury is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. Purpose-built flats are home to about 51% of households in the neighbourhood around Highbury, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
Living in a block of flats near Canonbury station? Then it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Close to Highbury Fields? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. For an older house near Christ Church, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

How we price built-in bookshelves
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- How big the furniture is
- The number of doors and drawers
How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
Getting in touch
Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:
- How you want to use the space
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Your postcode and the borough
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, message us from the contact page.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
With off-the-shelf shelving, you are limited to the maker’s finishes. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, so they can match the walls or stand out. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that don’t meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Highbury
- Built around your room
- Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
- Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
- Saturday work by prior arrangement
Take a look at how bespoke compares with ready-made and what a quote should include.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Where other trades come in
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:
- Relocating radiators or pipework
- Knocking through or altering walls
- Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

How fitting day works
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.
- You contact us about shelving around a door, a window or a chimney breast.
- At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
- We then send a quote in writing for the bookshelves.
- We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight, so there are no gaps along the sides.
- The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.
Preparing the room
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
How to get a quote
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To book one, get in touch through our contact form.
