Need built-in bookshelves in St Luke's?

Is bespoke worth it?

Bought bookcases usually come in one depth, which rarely suits a mixed collection. We can make deeper sections below and shallower ones above. Large off-the-shelf pieces can make a small room feel smaller, while fitted furniture, painted in a colour that suits the walls, reads as part of the room.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It’s useful to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.

Why choose us

  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Designed for the room you have
  • Every London borough and the City of London covered
  • Saturday visits and fitting by prior arrangement

About our built-in bookshelves in St Luke's

Bookshelves do not have to stop at a doorway or a window. A bookcase can wrap around a door, with shelves running over the top. It makes use of wall space that’s normally left bare. If you are living with somewhere to keep toys and books tidy and shelving behind a desk for books and files, built-in bookshelves made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

Many homes around St Luke's were built since 2000, and newer homes rarely come with any built-in shelving or media storage. We plan built-in bookshelves around the existing sockets and aerial points, with cable routes built in. Plasterboard on studs takes fitted furniture well, as long as the fixings suit it.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

What happens on fitting day

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so it helps to sort them out in advance. Built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the lift and doors.

  1. You get in touch about built-in bookshelves.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the wall, check how it is built and plan spans and depths with you.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, including spray or hand painting.
  4. We build the shelving in our workshop, sizing each shelf for what it carries. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the bookcase goes in, is levelled and scribed, and fixed securely.

Advice

Caring for painted furniture

These points come up often when people plan built-in bookshelves. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Let us know about access early
  • Allow room for the collection to grow
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need moving
  • Mention anything very heavy, such as records or large art books

Dust shelves with a soft cloth. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, which can mark the paint.

Keep any gap or opening above a radiator clear of books and objects. Heat needs to move into the room.

Flats, leases and landlords

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Questions we are often asked

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in St Luke's?

Yes, St Luke's is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Islington and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Do you cover homes near Old Street station?

Yes. We cover all of Islington and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

How do I get a quote for built-in bookshelves in St Luke's?

Simply message us from the contact page. Rough sizes and a few pictures help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

What prompts built-in bookshelves in St Luke's

Records, large art books and collections need shelves sized for them. Standard bookcases rarely suit them, and that is where bespoke shelving helps.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve are these:

  • Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
  • Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste
  • Low shelves children can reach
  • Space for art books and records

If you live in a period home close to Jewin Welsh Presbyterian Chapel, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.

What to check before you book

  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?

How to choose a carpenter in London

Living-room carpentry in St Luke's: local notes

About 37% of the homes in the streets around St Luke's went up since 2000, and about 28% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. Part of St Luke's is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Fewer homes around St Luke's date from before 1919 than across Islington: about 24%, against about 44%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We check what the walls are made of at the design visit, as they vary with the age of the home.

If you live near Artillery Ground, built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Wesley's Chapel, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
