About our built-in bookshelves in Finsbury
If a radiator sits where you’d like shelves, it is worth planning carefully. The heat needs somewhere to go, so any shelving over or around a radiator is planned with a gap or an open front. Some people prefer to keep the shelves clear of the radiator altogether, or ask their plumber about moving it. If you’re living with shelves packed two rows deep and shelves deep enough for large books, that’s what built-in bookshelves are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Homes built since 2000 are often open-plan, with the kitchen, dining and living space in one room, and many homes around Finsbury were built in that time. Built-in bookshelves can give the sitting end of an open-plan room its own identity. Finished floors in newer homes mark easily, so they’re covered while we work.
Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished.

Pricing built-in bookshelves in Finsbury
There is no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- How big the furniture is
- Parking and unloading on your street
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
What to send when you contact us
These details help when you contact us:
- Examples of the look you’re after
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Where you live, with the postcode
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
A row of standard bookcases rarely fills a wall, and against an uneven wall the gaps are obvious. Ours are scribed to the walls and can run up to the ceiling. Newer homes often have compact rooms where standard furniture leaves tricky gaps, while fitted furniture is made to the room. It can also be planned around boxed-in pipes and risers.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, and the quote follows.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Finsbury
- Edges scribed to follow your walls
- A spray or hand-painted finish
- Designed for the room you have
- Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home

How fitting day works
At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so it is useful to sort them out ahead of time. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.
- It starts when you let us know about the wall and your books.
- At the design visit we measure and plan the shelves together.
- Your written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
- We make the shelving in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray finish is applied there too, if you chose it.
- We fit it in your home and go through it with you before we leave.
Before fitting day
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
Getting a quote
The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit. To arrange the visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Boards, parts and paint
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF gives sharp edges and smooth faces, ready for spray or hand painting. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice.
Spray-painted finish
A sprayed coat gets into corners and along edges, which suits shelving with lots of edges. You choose the colour at the design stage.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is quick to buy.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Questions we are often asked
Will a conservation area stop me having built-in bookshelves fitted in Finsbury?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Finsbury?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
How is the price worked out?
Each room is quoted on its own: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. You’ll get a written quote once we have measured up.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too.
What keeps bookshelves from bowing under books?
Whether a shelf sags depends on how long it is and what it carries. We size the shelves and use birch plywood where strength matters, with supports or shorter bays on long runs. Overloading any shelf will still make it bend, so spread heavy books out.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Finsbury homes and built-in bookshelves
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Finsbury were built since 2000 (about 36%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 33%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List has 322 entries within half a mile of the centre of Finsbury. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If you live on or close to a main road in Finsbury, let us know at the measuring visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.
If your children go to Prior Weston Primary School and Children's Centre or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. The wider area includes historic houses such as Mansion House, about 0.6 miles south. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. For an older house near Jewin Welsh Presbyterian Chapel, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
