Window seats in Battersea, Wandsworth

  • A recess under the window doing nothing
  • No comfortable place to sit in the light
  • A ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay

Practical tips

Looking after painted furniture is simple. These habits help most:

  • Clear the bay or window area before the design visit
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Think about the cushion you’d like and who will make it
  • Note the position of any radiator and its pipes

Before we leave, we check every lid and drawer with you. Any grille is checked so the radiator can still warm the room. That way, everything works as planned.

Open and close lids with care, rather than letting them drop. It keeps the hinges and edges in good order. Don’t overfill drawers, as heavy loads strain the runners.

Window seats for homes in Battersea

We make the seat itself, and you can source a cushion to the size we give you. That leaves the choice of fabric and style to you. We plan the depth and height so the seat is comfortable with a cushion on it. We make window seats from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a sash window with space beneath it going to waste and toys spread across a bedroom floor.

Older homes like many around Battersea have floors and ceilings that slope, and a large share of homes around Battersea are that old. Window seats are scribed to the walls and levelled on site so doors, lids and drawers run true. Picture rails, skirting and cornices are worked around rather than removed, and the paint colour is agreed with you.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Window seats in Battersea: local notes

In the streets around Battersea, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 48%) and the years since 2000 (about 20%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Battersea is partly covered by the Clapham Junction Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 22% of households in the streets around Battersea, based on Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.

For families living near Christ Church CofE Primary School, window seats can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. Living in a block of flats near Clapham Junction station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. For an older house near Clapham Welsh Presbyterian Church, window seats can be scribed to follow a bay that’s rarely square.

Battersea is about 1 mile north-west of Clapham Junction, in the London Borough of Wandsworth. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Battersea is part of that. Our work takes in places right across Wandsworth, large and small.

We make window seats across SW11, SW18 and SW4 for window seats. Whether you live on a street such as York Road, Este Road and Home Road or on one nearby, we can visit to measure up for window seats. The A3207 runs close to Battersea; on busy main roads, unloading window seats takes a little planning. We also cover the places around Battersea: Clapham Junction (1 mile north-west), Sands End (1 mile north-west), Chelsea Harbour (1 mile north-west), Wandsworth (1 mile south-west) and Clapham (1 mile east). Elsewhere in Wandsworth, we also cover Putney (2 miles west), Tooting (2 miles south), Tooting Bec (2 miles south), Balham (2 miles south-east), Southfields (2 miles south-west) and Furzedown (3 miles south). Being one of the larger places in Wandsworth, Battersea is covered for all of our fitted furniture.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Common questions about window seats

How do you fit window seats in a flat in Battersea?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Window seats are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

I live near Clapham Junction station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Wandsworth and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

What does a bespoke window seat cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The size of the window, the storage and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, message us from the contact page and we will arrange a design visit.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you get in touch through our contact form.

When you need someone else

Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:

  • Work on the window frame or glass
  • Painting the walls of the bay
  • Making the seat cushion, which isn’t our work

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What it’s made from

  • Radiator grilles
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Lift-up lids or drawers
  • Spray-painted finish

What affects the price in Battersea

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • How many doors and drawers there are

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Helping us understand the room

To give us a picture of the room, it is useful to include:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

To get a quote for window seats in Battersea, send us a few details through our contact form. Tell us which room it is and roughly what you have in mind. We’ll arrange a design visit, then send a written quote.

Fitting day, step by step

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You tell us about the window and the room, with a note of any radiator or shutters.
  2. At the design visit, every side of the window is measured. Then we talk through the seat height and storage.
  3. The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows.
  4. Every part is built in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
  5. The seat is fitted, scribed to the walls and checked with you. A radiator grille, if there is one, lets the heat through.

Preparing the room

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Getting a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.
