Built-in bookshelves in Bermondsey: what you get
You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves add stiffness and look solid, while adjustable shelves let you move the spacing later. We often mix the two. Typical reasons to get in touch are room for a record collection and bare walls that could hold shelving; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
In a mansion block flat, ceilings are often tall and the walls are rarely straight, while a flat in a newer block is more likely to have plasterboard partitions. Around Bermondsey, most households live in purpose-built flats of one kind or another, so we check what each wall is made of before planning built-in bookshelves. Whatever the wall, tall pieces are fixed back securely.
You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves
How do you fit built-in bookshelves in a flat in Bermondsey?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
How long will the fitting take?
The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.
How much will my built-in bookcase cost?
It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

Pricing built-in bookshelves in Bermondsey
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- How many doors and drawers there are
How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
What to send when you contact us
Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Where you live, with the postcode
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.
Built-in bookshelves in Bermondsey: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Bermondsey were built since 2000 (about 33%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 23%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List has 110 entries within half a mile of the centre of Bermondsey. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Near central London, streets tend to be narrow and busy, so carrying the sections from the van to the door takes planning.
If you live in a flat close to London Bridge station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. Close to Bermondsey Spa Gardens? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. If you live in a period home close to St Mary Magdalen Bermondsey, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?
With off-the-shelf shelving, you are limited to the maker’s finishes. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, so they can match the walls or stand out. Standalone furniture takes up floor without using the height of the room. Fitted furniture can go to the ceiling and fill a recess exactly.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Bermondsey
- Saturdays by prior arrangement
- Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
- 300+ projects completed
- Fitted tight to walls that are not straight

From workshop to your room
Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. With little room to spare in a flat, pieces come in as they’re needed. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. The fixings suit each wall, whether solid or stud.

Starting with a design visit
It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we will arrange a design visit.
Related advice
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.
