Surrey Quays Built-in Bookshelves

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make built-in bookshelves for homes in Surrey Quays, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Room for a record collection
  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files
  • Shelving that frames a window

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

For cupboard doors below the shelves, MDF gives a flat, stable door. It has no grain to show through.

Plinths and scribe strips

Most period walls need scribing. It’s what makes shelving look part of the room.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Surrey Quays

Built-in shelving fills a wall, an alcove or a whole room, and is made for that space. It can run wall to wall and up to the ceiling, so books have a proper home. For a home in Surrey Quays, the first step is a design visit to measure up and talk through your books. If your home has bowing shelves in an old bookcase and shelving that works with picture rails and cornices, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Many homes around Surrey Quays were built since 2000, and newer homes seldom have fitted storage in the living room. We plan built-in bookshelves around the existing sockets and aerial points, with routes for cables designed in. Plasterboard on studs takes fitted furniture well, as long as the fixings suit it.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the built-in bookcase designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

How fitting day works

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. On the day, floors are covered first and the sections brought in. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.

  1. You contact us with some details about the wall and your books. A rough idea of the wall and the books is plenty to start with.
  2. We visit to measure up, look at the wall and agree shelf depths and spacing.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the shelving in our workshop, sizing each shelf for what it carries. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the bookcase goes in, is levelled and scribed, and fixed securely. Fixings are chosen to suit brick, plaster or stud walls.

Before fitting day

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Surrey Quays

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Surrey Quays station?

Yes, homes across Southwark and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Surrey Quays?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, but it’s useful to be around at the end.

Should my shelves be fixed or adjustable?

It’s your choice: fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing later. A mix often works best.

How do I get a quote for built-in bookshelves in Surrey Quays?

It’s easiest to use our contact form with some details about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.

Where other trades come in

It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
  • Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job
  • Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Living-room carpentry in Surrey Quays: local notes

About 42% of the homes in the streets around Surrey Quays went up since 2000, and about 26% between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Surrey Quays, 4 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Southwark included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Surrey Quays, as it does anywhere else in London. We plan parking and access with you at the design visit.

If you live in a period home close to St Katharine with St Bartholomew, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. If you live near Deptford Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. The wider area includes historic houses such as Queen's House, about 1.9 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

Tips worth knowing

Getting the most from built-in bookshelves starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Count roughly how many shelves your books fill now
  • Think about cupboards below for things you’d rather hide
  • Ask your electrician about sockets early
  • Measure your tallest and deepest books

On an outside wall, do not pack books tight against the back so air can move. Watch for any musty smell or marks.

Overloading is the main cause of sagging. Mention any heavy collection you plan to add when we design the shelves.
