Built-in Bookshelves in Peckham
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make built-in bookshelves for homes in Peckham, each designed at a visit to your home.
- Shelving behind a desk for books and files
- Storage for children’s books and games
- Shelves that sag under books
Ask about built-in bookshelves in Peckham
Is it time for built-in bookshelves?
Sagging or wobbly bookcases are another reason. Bowing is a sign the shelves are too long or too thin for the load. Bespoke shelves are sized for the span and the weight.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste
- Books piled on the floor
- Shelving that frames a window
- Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices
The wider area includes historic houses such as Queen's House, about 2.6 miles east. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.
What to check before you book
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Real projects you can actually look at
- Where they’ll park and unload
How we make built-in bookshelves for Peckham
We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. MDF suits the panels and faces, while birch plywood is used where strength matters. You can have a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in the colour you choose. We fit across Southwark and the rest of London. We make built-in bookshelves from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about shelves that suit a period room and shelves packed two rows deep.
Where housing types are mixed, as they are in much of London, living rooms vary a lot in shape. You might have alcoves, a bay, a wide open-plan room or a compact one. Built-in bookshelves are designed for the room in Peckham that you have, and long shelves are sized not to sag.
A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

What it is made from
Hand-painted finish
With hand painting, you see the colour in the room’s own light. Joins and scribed edges are painted in the same coats.
Spray-painted finish
Because the bookcase is sprayed before fitting, it arrives finished. Treat the shelves gently while the paint cures.
What happens on fitting day
The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. It is useful to clear the room and the route in before fitting day, including anything on the walls near the work. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.
- You contact us with a few details about the wall and your books. A rough idea of the wall and the books is plenty to start with.
- At the design visit, we measure the wall, check how it’s built and plan spans and depths with you.
- You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish, including spray or hand painting.
- We build the shelving in our workshop, sizing each shelf for what it carries. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: the bookcase goes in, is levelled and scribed, and fixed securely. Fixings are chosen to suit brick, plaster or stud walls.
Before fitting day
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
Getting a quote
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.
Advice
More for homes in Peckham
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Peckham
I live in a flat in Peckham. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Do you cover homes near Queens Road Peckham station?
Yes. We cover all of Southwark and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
How is the price worked out?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
What depth do built-in bookshelves need?
It depends on what you keep. Paperbacks need much less depth than art books or records, so many people mix depths. We plan depths around your collection during the design visit.
How do I get started?
Just get in touch through our contact form. It helps to send rough measurements and a few photos, and we will arrange a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.
Built-in bookshelves for homes in Peckham
Homes built before 1919 make up about 39% of the housing in the streets around Peckham, with about 21% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There are 75 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Peckham. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and built-in bookshelves can be designed to work around them. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Southwark is inside it. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Peckham. We go through parking and access at the design visit.
Close to Brimmington Park? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. If your children go to John Donne Primary School or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Tall standalone bookcases still need fixing to the wall, so it’s already halfway to built in. What changes is the fit, the shelf strength and the finish. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in set sizes, and real rooms rarely match them, so it leaves gaps at the ends and empty space above. Built-in pieces fill the space they’re made for.
Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it.
