Flat-pack or bespoke?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
How we make TV and media units for Bermondsey
Sockets often need to move for a built-in TV wall, behind the screen or inside a cupboard. That job is for your electrician. Ideally it’s done before the unit goes in, and we can tell you where the unit will sit. Typical reasons to get in touch are a screen at the wrong height and space for a soundbar and speakers; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
In a block of flats, the stairs, lift and doors decide how big each section can be. With purpose-built flats home to most households around Bermondsey, TV and media units are designed in sections from the start. The joins are placed where they will not show once the furniture is fitted.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

How fitting works for TV and media units
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Where there’s no lift, each section is sized to be carried up the stairs safely. The tightest landing sets the largest piece. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed.
- You get in touch with details of the room and where it is in your home.
- We visit to plan the unit and check the way in. Let us know about parking too, since a van may need a visitor permit or a paid bay.
- A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
- The sections are carried in, assembled and set level, ready for your equipment. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
Advice
Practical tips
Looking after painted furniture is simple. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Note the size of each box and speaker
- Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
- Find out how much space each box needs around it
- Measure your TV, or the size you expect to buy next
Use the access panels and cable routes when you add or change leads rather than drilling new holes. It keeps the unit tidy.
Keep ventilation gaps and open backs clear when you add equipment.
What we don’t do
Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we don’t do:
- Installing aerials, satellite dishes or broadband
- Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast
- Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

Living-room storage in Bermondsey
In the area around Bermondsey, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 33%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 23%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Bermondsey include Roman Catholic Church of The Most Holy Trinity (Grade II*), less than half a mile north-east, and Church of St Mary Magdalene (Grade II*), less than half a mile west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Purpose-built flats are more common around Bermondsey than across Southwark: about 79% of households, against about 64%, according to Census 2021. That puts the stairs, lifts and doors on the route in at the centre of the plan.
Close to Bermondsey Spa Gardens? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. If you live in a flat close to London Bridge station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If you live in a period home close to St Mary Magdalen Bermondsey, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

Your questions about TV and media units in Bermondsey
Is Bermondsey in the area you cover for TV and media units?
Yes, we work across Southwark, Bermondsey included, and across the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
I live in a flat in Bermondsey. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
What happens during the design visit?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
How do I get a quote for TV and media units in Bermondsey?
Simply send us a few details through our contact form. Rough measurements and a few photos help, and we will arrange a design visit.
What it costs
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:
- How big the furniture is
- How square the room is
- Spray painting or hand painting
- How many doors and drawers there are
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
What we need to know
These details help when you get in touch:
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- How you want to use the space
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.
