About our built-in bookshelves in Camberwell

A built-in bookcase is shelving made for one wall, one alcove or one room. It runs from wall to wall and, if you like, up to the ceiling, so books have a proper home. For a home in Camberwell, we start with a design visit to measure the wall and talk through what the shelves will hold. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about space for art books and records and empty alcoves that could hold books.

In a block of flats, the stairs, lift and doors decide how big each section can be. Since most households around Camberwell live in purpose-built flats, the sections for built-in bookshelves are planned during the design visit, with the route in measured as well as the room. The joins are placed where they won’t show once the furniture is fitted.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

What it is made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF gives crisp edges and smooth faces. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice.

Shelves

For a long shelf, we use a thicker board, a lip on the front or a support so it stays straight under books. Shorter bays are another answer.

Built-in bookshelves in Camberwell: local notes

About 29% of the homes in the streets around Camberwell went up before 1919, and about 26% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Camberwell include Church of St Giles (Grade II*), less than half a mile south-east, and Camberwell Public Baths (Grade II), under half a mile west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. About 67% of households in the neighbourhood around Camberwell live in purpose-built flats, based on Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

For a flat near Denmark Hill station, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For an older house near St Giles' Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Close to Brunswick Park? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

Honest limits

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
  • Redecorating, which is for your decorator

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

Why bespoke in Camberwell?

Many flat-pack shelves are thin and long, so they bow once they’re full of books. We size each shelf for its span and load, using birch plywood, thicker shelves or supports where needed. Standalone furniture takes up floor without using the height of the room. Built-in pieces use the full height and the tricky corners.

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Why us?

  • 300+ projects completed
  • We work across all London boroughs
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose

Questions we are often asked

Will a conservation area stop me having built-in bookshelves fitted in Camberwell?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

My home in Camberwell is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?

That depends on how the wall is built. We fix bookshelves with fixings that suit the wall, into sound brick or studs. If a wall isn’t suitable, we will tell you.

Can I send photos ahead of the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

Can you build shelves over a doorway?

Yes. A bookcase around a door or window uses the whole wall. We measure the openings during the design visit.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.

From workshop to your room

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Where there is no lift, each section is sized to be carried up the stairs safely. The tightest landing sets the largest piece. The pieces are assembled in the flat.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the books and objects you want on show is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and talk through shelf spans, depths and spacing so the shelves won’t sag.
  3. Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
  4. In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
  5. We fit it in your home with fixings that suit the wall, and a hand-painted finish, if you chose one, follows on site.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Empty the space we will be working in

Ask for a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.
