Built-in bookshelves for your home in South Bermondsey

Built-in bookshelves in South Bermondsey

A full bookcase is heavy, so the fixings matter. We fix built-in bookshelves to sound walls with fixings that suit how the wall is built. Loose plaster or a weak wall should be dealt with first. We make built-in bookshelves from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about storage for children’s books and games and shelves packed two rows deep.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around South Bermondsey, and in a flat the living room often has to do several jobs. A single run of built-in bookshelves can hold the TV, books and the things you’d rather keep out of sight, keeping the floor clear. Fixings are matched to the wall, whether it’s solid or plasterboard.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Pricing built-in bookshelves in South Bermondsey

The price for your room depends on:

  • Parking near your home
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

What to send when you contact us

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll typically ask about:

  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.

How fitting day works

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. With little room to spare in a flat, pieces come in as they’re needed. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. The fixings suit each wall, whether solid or stud.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind.
  2. We visit to measure the wall and go through the design. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
  4. We make the shelves and carcasses in our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home, fixed securely to the wall.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Advice

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

The problems built-in bookshelves solve

Working from home is another reason. Shelves for books and files close to the desk make the day easier, and a built-in run looks tidy on a video call. Cupboards underneath hide printers, paper and clutter.

Some of the things we are asked to solve include:

  • Storage for children’s books and games
  • Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste
  • Shelves that sag under books
  • Shelves that suit a period room

If you live in a period home close to Church of St Augustine, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Have they thought about parking near you?

What built-in bookshelves can’t fix

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
  • Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Questions from South Bermondsey

Is South Bermondsey in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes. We cover all of Southwark and the rest of London, and South Bermondsey is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in South Bermondsey?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Should my shelves be fixed or adjustable?

It is your choice: fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves add stiffness to the bookcase, and adjustable ones let the spacing change. Many people choose both.

Can my walls take a full bookcase?

We check how the wall is built at the measuring visit. We use fixings that suit the wall, from solid brick to studwork, and heavy loads are fixed into sound structure. Loose plaster or a weak wall needs repairing before fitting.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

Getting it in is planned at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
