Built-in bookshelves designed for your room
Fitting day, step by step
In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know at the measuring visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

How we make built-in bookshelves for Berry's Green
Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. For a long shelf of books, we use a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support part way, or the run is split into shorter bays. We often use birch plywood, which is stiff and strong. People typically come to us about shelves packed two rows deep and storage for children’s books and games; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, and around Berry's Green, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large share of the housing. A long through room gives built-in bookshelves a whole wall to work with, or mark out the sitting end from the dining end. An extension’s plasterboard walls need different fixings from the original brick or block.
Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Berry's Green
I live near Chelsfield station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Is Berry's Green in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?
Yes. Berry's Green is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
Can my walls take a full bookcase?
The wall is checked when we measure. We use fixings that suit the wall, from solid brick to studwork, and heavy bookcases are fixed to sound parts of the wall. If the plaster is loose or the wall is weak, it should be put right first.
What happens at the measuring visit?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough sizes. You can send them when you fill in our short enquiry form.
How it is made
Shelves
Long spans need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. Shorter bays are another answer.
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, for an even, factory-like finish on shelves and uprights.

What affects the price in Berry's Green
What you pay depends on:
- The overall size of the piece
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Spray painting or hand painting
- The internal fittings
Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking at the design visit.
Getting in touch
Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Looking after your furniture
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Consider deeper cupboards at the bottom
- Mention parking and stairs when we visit
- Let us know where the heaviest things will go
- Let us know if a radiator sits where you’d like shelves
Leave a little air behind books on an external wall. Look out for damp signs early.
Do not block the space left for radiator heat with books or objects. Trapped heat is not good for the room or the books.
