Our built-in bookshelves across Bromley

Shelving near a radiator needs some thought. The heat needs somewhere to go, so any shelving over or around a radiator is planned with a gap or an open front. Some people prefer to keep the shelves clear of the radiator altogether, or ask their plumber about moving it. We make built-in bookshelves from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are low shelves children can reach and a room lined with books.

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote.

  1. To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the books and objects you want on show is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
  5. We fit it in your home with fixings that suit the wall, and a hand-painted finish, if you chose one, follows on site.

What affects the price in Bromley

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Homes across Bromley and their living rooms

Some living rooms across Bromley are long knocked-through rooms; others are compact flats where one wall has to hold everything. Either way, built-in bookshelves are planned around how the room is used day to day. You choose the colour, and whether it’s sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand.

In Bromley, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 30%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 27%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. About 30% of homes in Bromley date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, which shape where built-in bookshelves go. A quarter or more of the homes in Bromley (about 27%) were built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Post-war rooms tend to be simple shapes, often without a chimney breast, so a full wall of built-in bookshelves is often the answer, fixed to suit the wall, which may be concrete or block.

The ULEZ has covered every London borough since August 2023, and TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules.

Orpington: Close to Jubilee Country Park? Built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of All Saints, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

What it costs

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

Getting in touch

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll normally ask about:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit. To book one, use our contact form.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bought bookcases usually come in one depth. Bespoke shelving can mix depths to suit what you own.

What to check before you book

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber

Looking after your furniture

The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:

  • Tell us about parking and access at the design visit
  • Think about whether a radiator should move before fitting
  • Measure your tallest and deepest books
  • Plan heavy items for the lower shelves

Dust shelves with a soft cloth. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, as they can dull the finish.

Keep any gap or opening above a radiator clear of books and objects. Trapped heat is not good for the room or the books.

What prompts built-in bookshelves

Children’s books, toys and games often need a home too. We can plan low shelves they can reach and higher shelves for later.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • Low shelves children can reach
  • Room for a record collection
  • Bare walls that could hold shelving
  • Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices

Boards, parts and paint

Shelves

Depth is set around what you keep: shallow for paperbacks, deeper for art books and records.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood carcasses make a rigid bookcase that fixes securely to the wall.

Questions we’re often asked

Which boards do you build with?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes.

How do I get a quote?

It’s easiest to get in touch through our contact form and tell us about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Can my walls take a full bookcase?

We check how the wall is built at the design visit. Fixings are chosen to suit solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall, and heavy loads are fixed into sound structure. Loose plaster or a weak wall needs repairing before fitting.

Can shelves go around a radiator?

We plan around it with care. We leave space so heat is not trapped. Moving a radiator is a plumber’s job.

Do you make good the walls afterwards?

No. Our work is the furniture, not the walls, so any work on the walls is for a plasterer or decorator. The furniture is finished by spray or by hand, as agreed in your quote.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

It’s something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.
