Built-in bookshelves for homes in St Mary Cray
Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. Long spans carrying books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support, or we divide the run with uprights. We often use birch plywood, which is stiff and strong. If your home has a bare wall above a doorway and space for art books and records, built-in bookshelves made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
A good part of the housing around St Mary Cray is interwar, semi-detached or detached. In a typical 1930s house, the front room has a bay at one end and a chimney breast with an alcove to either side, and that layout shapes where built-in bookshelves work best. Walls are often truer than in older houses, but they’re still measured carefully and scribed where they wander.
The furniture is made in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
What we do not do
It is worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
- Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
- Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving
Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can use our contact form and we’ll tell you. How it works.

Materials and finishes
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting lets you judge the colour in your own room. Joins and scribed edges are painted in the same coats.
Shelves
Shelves can be fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves add rigidity, while adjustable ones can follow your books.
Caring for painted furniture
Getting the most from built-in bookshelves starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Consider deeper cupboards at the bottom
- Decide whether you want fixed shelves, adjustable shelves or both
- Let us know about access early
- Mention anything very heavy, like records or large art books
Fill the shelves evenly rather than all at once. Put the heaviest books on lower shelves and near uprights.
Do not load shelves beyond what they were planned for. If you plan to add a heavy collection later, say so during the design visit, so the shelves can be sized for it.
Living-room storage in St Mary Cray
Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 42% of the housing in the streets around St Mary Cray, with about 22% built between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of St Mary Cray include Church of St Mary (Grade II*), under half a mile north-east, and Spring Hall (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Bromley sets its own rules. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Tell us what the parking is like during the design visit.
Close to Jubilee Country Park? Built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. If you live in a flat close to St Mary Cray station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your children go to Poverest Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves
Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in St Mary Cray?
Yes, we work across Bromley, St Mary Cray included, and across the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to St Mary Cray station?
Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
How is the price worked out?
Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. You’ll get a written quote once we have measured up.
Can I send pictures before the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, message us from the contact page.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
It is made in sections, sized for the route as well as the room. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the design visit.
Can my walls take a full bookcase?
That depends on how the wall is built. Fixings are chosen for the wall type. Where a wall can’t take the load, we’ll say so and suggest another approach.
Fitting day, step by step
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- You get in touch about built-in bookshelves. A rough idea of the wall and the books is plenty to start with.
- At the design visit, we measure the wall, check how it’s built and plan spans and depths with you.
- You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish.
- We build the shelving in our workshop, sizing each shelf for what it carries. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: the bookcase goes in, is levelled and scribed, and fixed securely. Fixings are chosen to suit brick, plaster or stud walls.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
