From workshop to your room

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, and heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Any new sockets or plumbing are for your electrician or plumber.

  1. You contact us about shelving around a door, a window or a chimney breast.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
  3. We then send a quote in writing for the bookshelves.
  4. The sections are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight, so there are no gaps along the sides.
  6. Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Stonebridge Park

Built-in shelving fills a wall, an alcove or a whole room, and is made for that space. It can run wall to wall and up to the ceiling. For a home in Stonebridge Park, the first step is a design visit to measure up and talk through your books. If you’re living with books piled on the floor and wasted wall space around a door or window, built-in bookshelves made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

Many homes around Stonebridge Park were built since 2000, and across London a lot of homes from those years are flats in newer developments. In a compact new-build room, a shallower run of built-in bookshelves can add storage without crowding the space. Boxed-in pipes and service risers are common, and they can be built around rather than hidden badly.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Questions from Stonebridge Park

How do you fit built-in bookshelves in a flat in Stonebridge Park?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Built-in bookshelves are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Stonebridge Park?

Yes. We cover all of Brent and the rest of London, and Stonebridge Park is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking.

Can shelves go around a radiator?

It needs planning. We leave space so heat is not trapped. If you’d rather move it, that’s for a plumber, and is best done before we fit.

How is the price worked out?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.

Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?

It depends on the wall, which is why we look at it first. Fixings are chosen for the wall type. Where a wall cannot take the load, we’ll say so and suggest another approach.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Stonebridge Park

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Stonebridge Park were built since 2000 (about 50%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 24%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Stonebridge Park is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your street in Stonebridge Park joins a main road, it’s worth telling us during the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

If you live near St. Raphael's Edible Garden, built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. If you live in a flat close to Stonebridge Park station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If your home is one of the older houses near St Michael the Archangel, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

How we price built-in bookshelves

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The width and height of the space
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

Getting in touch

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • How you want to use the space
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Caring for painted furniture

New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Think about whether a radiator should move before fitting
  • Let us know where the heaviest things will go
  • Think about whether the spacing needs to change later
  • Ask your electrician about sockets early

Paint is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. For the first while, place books gently rather than sliding them along.

Do not load shelves beyond what they were planned for. If you plan to add a heavy collection later, say so at the design visit, so we can allow for it.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf bookcases are cheaper and quick to buy. They also come with you when you move. Fitted shelving is made for one wall and stays with the house, and that’s worth weighing up. Separate ready-made pieces can make an open-plan room feel unplanned, while fitted furniture can give the space structure.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It is useful to talk about parking at the measuring visit.
