Pricing built-in bookshelves in Brunswick Park

What you pay depends on:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Parking near your home
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

Helping us understand the room

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

How we make built-in bookshelves for Brunswick Park

Shelving near a radiator needs some thought. The heat needs somewhere to go, so any shelving over or around a radiator is planned with a gap or an open front. Some people prefer to keep the shelves clear of the radiator altogether, or ask their plumber about moving it. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste and somewhere to keep toys and books tidy.

A good part of the housing around Brunswick Park is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the front room may have a bay window at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall, and that layout shapes where built-in bookshelves work best. Walls in houses of that age are normally straighter than in Victorian ones, though they’re still checked and scribed where needed.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

What built-in bookshelves can’t fix

Not everything around built-in bookshelves is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Knocking through or altering walls
  • Plumbing work around the shelves
  • Redecorating, which is for your decorator

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Birch plywood
  • Cupboards below
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Fixed and adjustable shelves

The problems built-in bookshelves solve

New owners of older houses often want shelving that suits the house. The alcoves beside a chimney breast are an obvious home for shelving.

Here’s what built-in bookshelves can help with:

  • Empty alcoves that could hold books
  • Books with nowhere left to go
  • Wasted wall space around a door or window
  • Storage for children’s books and games

If your children go to St Andrew the Apostle Greek Orthodox School or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked

Brunswick Park homes and built-in bookshelves

About 60% of the homes in the streets around Brunswick Park went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 13% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Barnet has its own. If your street in Brunswick Park is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay through the council may be needed. Let us know about parking at the design visit. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Barnet included. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Brunswick Park. How the van gets to your door is planned at the measuring visit.

If you live near Friary Park, built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. Living in a block of flats near New Southgate station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

What happens on fitting day

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch about built-in bookshelves.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan the shelves together.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. We make the shelving in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray finish is applied there too, if you chose it.
  5. We fit it in your home and go through it with you before we leave. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it is best to load the shelves gently at first.

Preparing the room

Arranging a design visit

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Advice

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Brunswick Park

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Brunswick Park?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Brunswick Park?

Yes. Brunswick Park is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Barnet and London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

The furniture is built in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. At the design visit, we measure the route not just the room.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?

Standalone bookcases cost less and you can have them right away. You can take them to your next home. Built-in shelves stay with the house and are made for its walls, which is the trade-off. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
