Built-in bookshelves for your home in Southgate
What it costs
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- How square the room is
- How many doors and drawers there are
- The width and height of the space
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Before the design visit
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
Built-in bookshelves in Southgate
Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. Long spans carrying books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support, or we divide the run with uprights. Birch plywood is strong and helps shelves stay flat. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are shelves packed two rows deep and alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste.
In an area like Southgate, where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, many homes have had the front and back rooms knocked together. That leaves a long room with a chimney breast on one side, which suits built-in bookshelves along that wall. Cable routes for a TV or speakers, and space for set-top boxes, are planned during the design visit, with any new sockets left to your electrician.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Why bespoke in Southgate?
Bought bookcases normally come in one depth. Bespoke shelving can mix depths to suit what you own. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.
Why us?
- Every quote follows a design visit
- Saturday work by arrangement
- Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
- Fitted tight to walls that are not straight

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves
Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is normally more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- You send us a few details about the room and what the shelves will hold, and whether you want cupboards below.
- At the design visit, we measure up, check the wall and plan the shelf spans with you. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
- You receive a written quote setting out the shelving, materials and finish.
- The bookcase is made at our workshop.
- We install the bookcase, set it level and fix it with fixings that suit the wall.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Common questions about built-in bookshelves
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Southgate?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Can you build shelves over a doorway?
Yes. Wrapping shelves around a door or window is a good way to fill a wall. The openings are measured when we visit.
Do you cover areas outside London?
No. We only take on work in London.
Will built-in bookshelves sag?
Sag comes down to span, depth and load. We size the shelves and use birch plywood where strength matters, with supports or shorter bays on long runs. Spreading heavy books helps too.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We’ll design around them.
Where other trades come in
We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:
- Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Structural changes, like taking out a chimney breast
- Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Could you do it yourself?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
Living-room storage in Southgate
About 59% of the homes in the streets around Southgate went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 16% before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There is a conservation area within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Southgate, going by Historic England’s data. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. About 59% of homes in the streets around Southgate date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, which shape where built-in bookshelves go.
If you live in a flat close to New Southgate station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. Near listed buildings like Essex House and Arnoside House, less than half a mile south-east of the centre of Southgate, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If your children go to Ashmole Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.
