FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Brentford

Will a conservation area stop me having built-in bookshelves fitted in Brentford?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

I live near Brentford station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Hounslow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

How deep should bookshelves be?

The depth is set around your books. Another option is deeper storage below and shallower shelves above.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

Getting it in is planned at the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

What keeps bookshelves from bowing under books?

Shelves are sized for their span, depth and the weight they’ll carry. For long runs, we use a thicker shelf, a front lip or a support. Mention anything very heavy when we plan.

About our built-in bookshelves in Brentford

Shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves help brace the bookcase, while adjustable shelves let you move the spacing later. We often mix the two so the bookcase stays rigid and you keep some flexibility. Most enquiries start with shelves that suit a period room and shelving behind a desk for books and files, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Homes built since 2000 are often open-plan, with the kitchen, dining and living space in one room, and around Brentford many homes date from those years. In a room like that, built-in bookshelves can help separate the sitting area from the kitchen, without putting up a wall. Floors are protected throughout, as newer finishes mark easily.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bought bookcases come in the maker’s colours. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, to suit the room. Separate ready-made pieces can make an open-plan room feel unplanned, whereas fitted furniture can define each part of the room.

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Tips worth knowing

Looking after painted furniture is simple. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Mention anything very heavy, such as records or large art books
  • Tell us if a radiator sits where you’d like shelves
  • Ask your electrician about sockets early
  • Let us know about parking and access at the measuring visit

Painted shelves feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. For the first while, place books gently rather than sliding them along, to avoid marking the new finish.

Overloading is the main cause of sagging. If you plan to add a heavy collection later, say so at the measuring visit, so the shelves can be sized for it.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot advise on your lease.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Brentford

In the neighbourhood around Brentford, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 38%) and before 1919 (about 23%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The St Paul's Brentford Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Brentford. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. About 55% of households in the area around Brentford live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

The wider area includes historic houses like Kew Palace, about 0.5 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. If you live near Kew Green, built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. For a flat near Brentford station, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

How fitting day works

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so it helps to let us know at the measuring visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up, check the wall and plan the shelf spans with you. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
  5. We install the bookcase, set it level and fix it with fixings that suit the wall.

How to prepare

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
