TV and media units in Chiswick: what you get

If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan the panels and shelves around the bracket position, with a route for the cables behind the screen. If the TV stands on the unit instead, the top is sized and positioned for it, with the cables kept out of sight. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are space for a soundbar and speakers and cables trailing across the wall.

Rooms in houses from before 1919 tend to have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around Chiswick date from then. That gives full-height TV and media units room to reach the picture rail or the cornice, so the furniture looks as if it belongs to the house. Blocked fireplaces are common too, and a capped chimney should still be ventilated before anything is built against it.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Built-in living-room furniture in Chiswick

In the streets around Chiswick, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 53%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 14%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List has 168 entries within half a mile of the centre of Chiswick. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. The share of homes built before 1919 around Chiswick, about 53%, is well above the figure for Hounslow as a whole, about 16%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of TV and media units.

For a flat near Chiswick station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. For an older house near St. Nicholas Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. Close to Turnham Green? TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

Common questions about TV and media units

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Chiswick station?

Yes, homes across Hounslow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room.

My house in Chiswick is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

How do I get started?

Just fill in our short enquiry form. It helps to send rough measurements and a few photos, and then we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote in writing.

How much will my TV unit cost?

Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You’ll get a written quote once we’ve measured up.

Do TV units need ventilation?

Ventilation is designed in wherever equipment sits, using open backs, gaps or vented doors. Each box should have its own space.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Before and after fitting day

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Think about the viewing height from your sofa
  • Find out how much space each box needs around it
  • Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting
  • Think about whether you want the screen on a bracket or on a shelf

Painted finishes feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. For the first while, place equipment gently rather than sliding it to avoid marks.

Label cables when you set things up to make future changes easier.

Bespoke TV and media units or ready-made?

Most stands have a cable hole or two at the back, but cables normally still show somewhere. A built-in unit has routes planned through it. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Furniture made for the space fills it.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit.

What happens on fitting day

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays during the design visit.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the wall and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, for you to look over.
  4. The unit is made in our workshop, with cable routes and vents built in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and ready for your equipment. A hand-painted finish is done on site, if you chose one.

Preparing the room

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
