Built-in bookshelves for homes in Hounslow

In period rooms, shelving has to meet skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Shelves can stop beneath the picture rail, run to the cornice or be cut around the details. Walls in older houses are rarely flat, so we scribe the edges on site. If your home has bookshelves in keeping with an older house and wasted wall space around a door or window, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Wherever your home in Hounslow sits in London’s mix of housing, the furniture is designed around your room rather than a standard size. Older rooms bring uneven walls and picture rails, while newer ones bring plasterboard walls and boxed-in pipes. We measure for whichever you have, and the pieces are made to suit.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Hounslow

Is Hounslow in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Hounslow station?

Yes, homes across London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

How long does it take to fit built-in bookshelves?

It depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The bookcase is made in our workshop first, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

How much will my built-in bookcase cost?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

From workshop to your room

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You contact us about shelving around a door, a window or a chimney breast.
  2. We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the shelving in your home, scribing the edges to follow the walls and ceiling, so there are no gaps along the sides.
  6. Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Starting with a design visit

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we will arrange a design visit.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Is bespoke worth it?

Many flat-pack shelves are thin and long, and they can sag under a full load. We size each shelf for its span and load. Walls and floors are seldom perfectly flat in any home, and standalone units show it with gaps and wobbles. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Why us?

  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
  • A design visit, then a quote in writing
  • Built around your room
  • Saturday work by arrangement

Built-in living-room furniture in Hounslow

In the neighbourhood around Hounslow, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 30%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 27%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 3 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Hounslow. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If you live on or close to a main road in Hounslow, let us know during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

Living in a block of flats near Hounslow station? Then the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Worton Hall, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. The wider area includes historic houses such as Osterley House, about 1.6 miles north. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

What built-in bookshelves cannot fix

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
  • Relocating radiators or pipework
  • Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Birch plywood
  • Cupboards below
  • Fixed and adjustable shelves
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish

What it costs

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • How square the room is
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll usually ask about:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Any ideas or images you have saved

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To book one, message us from the contact page.
