Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Chiswick
Some people want doors on everything; others like open shelves and rails. Doors give a tidy, finished look and help keep dust away, while open storage lets you see everything at once. The choice is yours, and we’ll go through it when we measure. People usually come to us about moving wardrobes out of the bedroom and storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Chiswick, many bedrooms sit against solid brick external walls. Those walls can be colder than internal ones, so wardrobes and storage on them are designed with ventilation behind and inside to help avoid condensation. Smaller back bedrooms in houses of that age are good places for walk-in wardrobes.
A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

More for homes in Chiswick
Fitting day, step by step
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays at the measuring visit.

Advice
Bedroom storage in Chiswick
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Chiswick were built before 1919 (about 53%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 14%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 168 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Chiswick. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and walk-in wardrobes can be designed to work around them. Around Chiswick, about 53% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Hounslow as a whole, about 16%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.
If you live near Turnham Green, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window. The wider area includes historic houses such as Hogarth's House, about 0.2 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.
Chiswick is about 4 miles west of Hounslow, in the London Borough of Hounslow. Wherever you are in Chiswick, the process is the same: a design visit, a written quote, furniture built in our workshop and fitting in your home. Chiswick is one of 25 places on our list for Hounslow.

Questions from Chiswick
How do you fit walk-in wardrobes in a flat in Chiswick?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Walk-in wardrobes are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Chiswick?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and a quote in writing follows.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
How long will the walk-in wardrobe take to fit?
The time the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
If you are likely to move soon, standalone furniture you can take with you may suit better. It’s worth thinking about how long you plan to stay before choosing fitted. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it can’t tip, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

What prompts walk-in wardrobes in Chiswick
Others want to clear the bedroom of wardrobes. With clothes in a dressing room, the bedroom can feel more restful.
Requests we hear often include:
- Proper shoe storage
- Room for a growing wardrobe
- A dressing area in part of a bedroom
- Separate space for two people’s clothes
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Chiswick House Conservatory, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
What to check before you book
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- How parking will work on your street
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
Tips worth knowing
None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:
- Think about whether you want doors
- Have damp sorted before fitting
- Have a clear-out before we measure
- Count your coats and long garments
Adjustable shelves can be moved as your clothes change, so the space keeps working. A seasonal tidy keeps it working well.
Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease early. We can’t advise on your lease.
