TV and media units in Connaught Village, Westminster

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make TV and media units for homes in Connaught Village, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • A screen at the wrong height
  • Equipment with nowhere proper to go
  • Nowhere good for speakers

From workshop to your room

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking near blocks of flats can be limited, and loading may need planning, so tell us about bays, permits or any loading area during the design visit. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You describe the TV wall and your equipment.
  2. We come to measure and talk through screen height, speakers and cables.
  3. A quote in writing follows. If anything in it is unclear, ask us.
  4. Once you’re happy, the unit is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable routes planned in.
  5. We bring it to your home and fit it in place.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Starting with a design visit

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough sizes. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

How we make TV and media units for Connaught Village

Set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers give off heat, so sealing equipment in a cupboard is not a good idea. Ventilation is planned into the design. Equipment makers often say how much space their boxes need around them. If you’re living with a screen at the wrong height and space for a soundbar and speakers, TV and media units made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

With most households around Connaught Village in purpose-built flats, getting the furniture into the building matters as much as the design. TV and media units are made in sections sized to go up the stairs, into the lift and through the front door, then joined and scribed in the room. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot advise on your lease.

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standalone TV units cost less and arrive quickly. A stand is also simple to swap when technology moves on. Bespoke units are made for one wall and the things you use. Large ready-made pieces can be hard to get up the stairs or into the lift, while fitted furniture arrives in sections sized for the route. The sections are assembled once inside.

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

FAQs: TV and media units in Connaught Village

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Is Connaught Village in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes, we work across Westminster, Connaught Village included, and across the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

How do you stop equipment overheating in a TV unit?

Ventilation is designed in wherever equipment sits. Each box should have its own space and you can check the maker’s guidance on clearances.

Can you build a TV unit for a wall-mounted TV?

We can plan for either a wall-mounted TV or one standing on the unit. If the TV is wall-mounted, panels and shelves are arranged around the bracket and cables.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

That’s normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

How is the price worked out?

Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You’ll get a written quote once we’ve measured up.

Is it time for TV and media units?

Some want the TV to sit better in a period room. Building it into the alcoves or around the chimney breast makes it part of the room.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • A big screen that dominates the wall
  • Space for a soundbar and speakers
  • Cables trailing across the wall
  • Equipment with nowhere proper to go

If your children go to Hampden Gurney CofE Primary School or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?

Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St John the Evangelist, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Mary, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

What affects the cost of TV and media units

The price for your room depends on:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What we need to know

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
