Built-in bookshelves in Hyde Park Estate: what you get
Shelf depth depends on what you keep. Paperbacks sit happily on shallow shelves, while art books, atlases and records need more. Too deep, and paperbacks get lost at the back; too shallow, and big books hang over the edge. Deeper cupboards below and shallower shelves above often work well. Typical reasons to get in touch are shelving that works with picture rails and cornices and room for a record collection, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Hyde Park Estate, so living rooms often double as dining rooms or home offices. Built-in bookshelves can bring shelving, closed storage and a screen into one run. Walls in flats can be brick, concrete, block or plasterboard, so fixings are chosen for each one.
Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Boards, parts and paint
Spray-painted finish
A sprayed coat gets into corners and along edges and leaves no brush marks. The colour is agreed before we start.
Hand-painted finish
With hand painting, you see the colour in the room’s own light. Joins and scribed edges are painted in the same coats.

Questions we are often asked
Can you fit furniture in a home close to London Paddington station?
Yes. We cover all of Westminster and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
How do you fit built-in bookshelves in a flat in Hyde Park Estate?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Can bookshelves go around a door?
Yes. Shelves can run either side of a door or window and bridge across the top. It uses wall space that’s often left bare, and a window can have a seat or desk beneath.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.
Can shelves go around a radiator?
It is possible with some thought. The heat has to rise and move into the room, so we leave a gap or open front rather than boxing the radiator in. Some people prefer to keep shelves clear of it or ask a plumber to move it.
Hyde Park Estate homes and built-in bookshelves
Homes built before 1919 make up about 42% of the housing in the streets around Hyde Park Estate, with about 18% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of Hyde Park Estate is in the Bayswater Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. Your council can advise if you are unsure. About 77% of households in the streets around Hyde Park Estate live in purpose-built flats, based on Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
If you live in a period home close to Church of St John the Evangelist, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Handel Hendrix House, about 1 mile east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.
Hyde Park Estate is within the City of Westminster, about 1 mile east of City of Westminster. Homes in Hyde Park Estate are part of the area we cover for built-in bookshelves. We list Hyde Park Estate among 29 places we cover in Westminster.

Is it time for built-in bookshelves?
Sagging or wobbly bookcases are another reason. A bowing shelf is normally too thin or too long for what it carries. Bespoke shelves are sized for the span and the weight.
Some of the things we’re asked to solve include:
- A bare wall above a doorway
- Low shelves children can reach
- Bookshelves in keeping with an older house
- Bookcases that lean or wobble
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Mary, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.
Choosing a carpenter

- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
Fitting day, step by step
At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Sections come into the flat in the order they’re fitted, so the flat doesn’t fill up. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Fixings are chosen for each wall, solid or plasterboard.
- You contact us with some details about the wall and your books.
- At the design visit, we measure the wall, check how it is built and plan spans and depths with you, and talk about cupboards below.
- We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, including spray or hand painting.
- The bookcase is made at our workshop, with shelves sized for their span and load. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: the bookcase goes in, is levelled and scribed, and fixed securely. Fixings are chosen to suit brick, plaster or stud walls.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Advice
When is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
What built-in bookshelves can’t fix
We do not treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:
- Decorating the rest of the room
- Plumbing work around the shelves
- Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you. How it works.
