Built-in bookshelves for homes in Cranham
Bookshelves don’t have to stop at a doorway or a window. We can build shelves either side of a door and bridge them over it, or frame a window with a seat or desk below. It makes use of wall space that’s usually left bare. People usually come to us about bowing shelves in an old bookcase and wasted wall space around a door or window, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Cranham, the main room is often well proportioned, with a bay, a chimney breast and not many other recesses. Built-in bookshelves can fill the alcoves, run the length of a wall or frame the chimney breast, depending on how you use the room. Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood keep the pieces stable, and the paint finish is agreed with you.
You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

What it costs
A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- How many doors and drawers there are
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
Before the design visit
To help us picture the room, please include:
- Examples of the look you’re after
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, use our contact form and let us know about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.
Fitting day, step by step
The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Cranham
Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Cranham?
Yes. Cranham is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Havering and London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Cranham?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Do built-in bookshelves have adjustable shelves?
They can be, and many people choose a mix. We normally keep some shelves fixed for strength.
What depth do built-in bookshelves need?
We set the depth to suit what you own. Another option is deeper storage below and shallower shelves above, and it keeps paperbacks from getting lost at the back.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Can you build shelves over a doorway?
Yes. Shelves can run either side of a door or window and bridge across the top. It uses wall space that is often left bare, and a window can have a seat or desk beneath.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Off-the-shelf bookcases are cheaper and quick to buy. They also come with you when you move. Fitted shelving is made for one wall and stays with the house, and that is worth weighing up. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

Living-room storage in Cranham
In the area around Cranham, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 64%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 21%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Cranham include Upminster Hall (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles north-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Havering included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Cranham. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.
If you live in a flat close to Upminster station, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For an older house near St Luke's Cranham, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. If your children go to Hall Mead School or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

- Making good walls that cannot take fixings
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.
