Fitting day, step by step

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind, and whether you want cupboards below.
  2. We come to measure, look at how the wall is built and agree the layout.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
  4. We make the shelves and carcasses in our workshop, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
  5. We fit it in your home, fixed securely to the wall. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Before we arrive

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

How to get a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Built-in bookshelves in Emerson Park: what you get

In period rooms, shelving has to meet skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Shelves can stop beneath the picture rail, run to the cornice or be cut around the details. Walls in older houses are rarely flat, so we scribe the edges on site. People normally come to us about bare walls that could hold shelving and shelves packed two rows deep; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Emerson Park, many living rooms have been opened up to the dining room behind. That leaves a long room with a chimney breast on one side, which suits built-in bookshelves along that wall. Cable routes for a TV or speakers, and space for set-top boxes, are planned during the design visit, with any new sockets left to your electrician.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

What it costs

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Parking near your home
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Before the design visit

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • How you want to use the space
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Caring for painted furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Think about whether the spacing needs to change later
  • Mention anything very heavy, such as records or large art books
  • Think about whether a radiator should move before fitting
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need moving

A soft, dry or slightly damp cloth is all painted shelves need. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, which can mark the paint.

Put coasters under anything that holds water to avoid water marks. Dry any spills quickly.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Emerson Park?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do you cover homes near Emerson Park station?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can bookshelves go around a door?

Yes. Shelves can run either side of a door or window and bridge across the top. It uses wall space that is often left bare.

Will built-in bookshelves sag?

Sag comes down to span, depth and load. We size the shelves and use birch plywood where strength matters, adding a lip or support on longer runs. Overloading any shelf will still make it bend, so spread heavy books out.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
