Cranham homes and bespoke kitchens

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 64% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Cranham, with about 21% built between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Cranham, Historic England’s list includes Upminster Hall (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles north-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. Where a home in Cranham is on or beside a main road, it is useful to mention that during the design visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

If you live near St. Andrew's Park, a cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen. Living in a block of flats near Upminster station? Then kitchens are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Hare Hall, about 3 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true.

Cranham is within the London Borough of Havering, about 4 miles west of Romford. We can visit homes in Cranham on weekdays, or on a Saturday by arrangement. Our work takes in places right across Havering, large and small.

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Cranham

A larder cupboard can hold more than a run of wall units. A larder can have shelves, deep drawers and racks, planned around what you store. Built into an alcove or the end of a wall, it puts awkward space to work. If you are living with cabinets for a narrow kitchen and a kitchen finished in your colours, that is what kitchens are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A good part of the housing around Cranham is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the original kitchen was probably small, and many have since been extended or opened up. The cabinets are designed for the room as it is today.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Ready-made cabinets often have chipboard carcasses. Ours are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray or hand painted, so the finish can be repainted later. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and interwar homes often have all three. Fitted furniture is made around them.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What it costs

The price for your room depends on:

  • The width and height of the space
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

What to send when you get in touch

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

How fitting day works

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. You tell us about the room and how you use it. Larders, dressers and islands can all be part of it, where space allows.
  2. We visit to measure and go through the design and storage.
  3. We send a quote in writing setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are made in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: we fit the cabinets, and your plumber, electrician and an engineer on the Gas Safe Register handle the services. We don’t arrange these trades ourselves.

Before we arrive

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Arranging a design visit

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a quote in writing. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

FAQs: bespoke kitchens in Cranham

Is parking a problem for fitting in Cranham?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Upminster station?

Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us, and we will see what we can do.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

How it’s made

Birch plywood

Open shelves in a kitchen need to stay straight, unless they’re built strong.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Most painted kitchen doors we make are moisture-resistant MDF, because it stays flat.

Caring for painted furniture

These points come up often when people plan bespoke kitchens. They help whatever the room:

  • Line up your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer early
  • Deal with damp walls first
  • Check stairs, hallways and lifts for access
  • Allow space to walk round an island

Do not leave water sitting on painted cabinets, especially around the sink and dishwasher. Moisture-resistant MDF copes well, but standing water is best avoided.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before changing the kitchen. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.
