Upminster Bridge Built-in Bookshelves
In Upminster Bridge, we design built-in bookshelves around the room you actually have. Your built-in bookcase is designed at a visit to your home and made in our workshop.
- Shelves that suit a period room
- Space for art books and records
- Wasted wall space around a door or window
Built-in bookshelves in Upminster Bridge
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
How we make built-in bookshelves for Upminster Bridge
Older rooms often have skirting, picture rails and coving to work around. Shelves can stop beneath the picture rail, run to the cornice or be cut around the details, whichever suits the room. Walls in older houses are rarely flat, so we scribe the edges on site. If you are living with shelving that works with picture rails and cornices and empty alcoves that could hold books, built-in bookshelves made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.
If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Upminster Bridge, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. Built-in bookshelves can fill the alcoves, run the length of a wall or frame the chimney breast. The carcasses are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, painted in a colour agreed with you.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Built-in bookshelves in Upminster Bridge: local notes
In the neighbourhood around Upminster Bridge, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 60%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 28%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List records 9 entries within half a mile of the centre of Upminster Bridge. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Havering is inside it. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Upminster Bridge. We go through parking and access at the design visit.
For a flat near Upminster station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For a family home near Sacred Heart of Mary Girls' School, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. Hare Hall, about 2.3 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
Upminster Bridge is about 3 miles north-west of Romford, within the London Borough of Havering. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, Upminster Bridge included. We cover places right across Havering.

How it’s made
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, for an even, factory-like finish on shelves and uprights.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish suits bookshelves in an older house. The colour is agreed with you, and refreshing it later is simple.
Common questions about built-in bookshelves
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Upminster Bridge?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Upminster station?
Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not typically. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Can shelves go around a radiator?
It can be done, but it needs careful planning. The heat has to rise and move into the room, so we plan an opening or gap and never box it in. Often the better answer is to stop the shelves short of it, or have your plumber move it.
What finishes do you offer?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Fitting day, step by step
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are normally straightforward, though we still measure the route in as well as the room. Built-in bookshelves arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.
- You get in touch and tell us about the wall and your books.
- We visit to measure the wall and go through the design. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
- We send a quote in writing for the bookshelves, for you to look over.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
- We fit it in your home, fixed securely to the wall.
How to prepare
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Advice
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Bespoke is not instant: it needs a design visit, a quote and making time. If you are only staying a short while, standalone shelving can make more sense. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and interwar homes often have all three. Fitted furniture is made around them.
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it during the design visit.
