Fitted bedroom furniture in Earlsfield

Homes built before 1919 make up about 65% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Earlsfield, with about 12% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. 4 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Earlsfield. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. About 31% of households in the streets around Earlsfield live in terraced houses, the 2021 Census shows. London terraces usually have a small back bedroom and alcoves in the main bedroom, which suit fitted furniture.

Fulham Palace, about 2.3 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Andrew, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Fitted wardrobes in Earlsfield: what you get

Loft conversions, common in London terraces, often leave sloping ceilings. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. Space that’s hard to use otherwise becomes useful storage. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are several odd pieces where one run of storage would do and standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall.

Around Earlsfield, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast with an alcove either side. Fitted storage can sit in the alcoves or span the wall, chimney breast and all. Because older floors slope and walls bow, everything is scribed and levelled on site.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

What we do not do

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
  • Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)

Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can message us from the contact page and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Earlsfield?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

I live near Earlsfield station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Wandsworth and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?

Each wardrobe is built in sections that suit the stairs, landings and lift, then assembled in the bedroom. Tell us if your block has lift or concierge booking rules.

What if my bedroom floor isn’t level?

Uneven floors are normal in older homes. We set fitted wardrobes level on a plinth or adjustable feet, so the doors hang true.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not typically. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

How is the price worked out?

Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You’ll get a written quote once we have measured up.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is stiff and grips screws firmly, which suits wardrobe carcasses, shelves and drawers. Its layered edge can be painted or left on show.

Hanging rails

Long rails need support so they do not bend under heavy coats. Rail lengths are planned so they stay straight.

What prompts fitted wardrobes in Earlsfield

A move is a common trigger. Standalone wardrobes from a previous home may not fit the new bedroom, or will not go up the stairs at all. Fitted wardrobes are designed for the room you have now.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • A room too narrow for hinged doors
  • A bedroom that never feels tidy
  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe

For families living near Beatrix Potter Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • How doors and drawers are fitted

How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. A written quote follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.

Before fitting day

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
