Wall beds for homes in Earlsfield

Studio flats benefit more than most from a bed that folds away. During the day, the room is somewhere to sit, work and eat; at night, the bed comes down. We can build shelves, cupboards or a desk around the bed cabinet, so the whole wall works hard. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about a storage wall with a bed inside and more floor space in a studio flat.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Earlsfield, plenty of bedrooms have solid brick external walls. Those walls can be colder than internal ones, so wardrobes and storage on them are designed with ventilation behind and inside to help avoid condensation. Small back bedrooms and box rooms are common too, and they suit wall beds and other fitted storage well.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

FAQs: wall beds in Earlsfield

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Earlsfield?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in Earlsfield?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

What does a wall bed cost?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The bed size, the cabinet and any storage around it all make a difference. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Do you work for landlords and letting agents?

Yes. The process is the same: a design visit, a quote in writing, then the furniture is made and fitted. Access can be arranged through the letting agent.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the measuring visit.

From workshop to your room

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made in our workshop come in next. The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the room and how often guests stay is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we check what the wall is made of, as a wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies.
  3. You receive a written quote for the wall bed and any storage.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves or desk are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinet in your home and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.
  6. Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.

Before fitting day

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Getting a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Wall beds in Earlsfield: local notes

Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your children go to Beatrix Potter Primary School or a school nearby, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. Near listed buildings like Church of St Andrew, under half a mile south of the centre of Earlsfield, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For an older house near St John the Divine, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.
