What we do not do
It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Structural changes, like taking out a chimney breast
- Relocating radiators or pipework
- Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Golders Green
A shelf’s strength depends on its span, its depth and its load. Long spans carrying books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. Birch plywood is strong and helps shelves stay flat. If your home has shelves that suit a period room and shelving that frames a window, built-in bookshelves made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
Solid brick external walls are standard in Victorian and Edwardian houses, while the walls inside can be brick or lath and plaster. With so many homes around Golders Green built before 1919, we check which you have before deciding how built-in bookshelves are fixed. Lath and plaster in particular needs fixings chosen for it.
The furniture is made in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

When is bespoke worth it?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Is it time for built-in bookshelves?
Records, large art books and collections need shelves sized for them. Standard bookcases rarely suit them, so people turn to bespoke shelving.
Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:
- Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy
- Shelving that frames a window
- Shelves that suit a period room
- Books piled on the floor
Close to Childs Hill Park? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
How fitting day works
At the end, we tidy up. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays at the design visit.
- You get in touch with a few details about where the bookshelves will go.
- We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
- A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
- We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight.
- The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.
Before fitting day
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Keep pets in another room while we work
How to get a quote
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a written quote. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Is bespoke worth it?
Standalone bookcases cost less and you can have them right away. They also come with you when you move. Fitted shelving is made for one wall and stays with the house. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Golders Green
My house in Golders Green is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Do you cover homes near Cricklewood station?
Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.
Can built-in shelves be adjustable?
It’s your choice: fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing later. A mix often works best.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Homes built before 1919 make up about 52% of the housing in the area around Golders Green, with about 26% built between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List has 67 entries within half a mile of the centre of Golders Green. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. About 26% of homes in the area around Golders Green date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, and built-in bookshelves are planned around both.
If your children go to Rimon Jewish Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If you live in a flat close to Cricklewood station, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
