Built-in bookshelves in East Wickham

Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. For a long shelf of books, we use a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support part way. We often use birch plywood, which is stiff and strong under heavy books. If your home has bookcases that lean or wobble and shelves that suit a period room, built-in bookshelves made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around East Wickham, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. Built-in bookshelves can fill the alcoves, run the length of a wall or frame the chimney breast. Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood keep the pieces stable, and the paint finish is agreed with you.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Built-in bookshelves in East Wickham: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 57% of the housing in the streets around East Wickham, with about 16% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There’s a conservation area within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of East Wickham, according to Historic England’s records. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 58% of households in the area around East Wickham, based on Census 2021. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary the Virgin, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. Danson House, about 1.3 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, for an even, factory-like finish on shelves and uprights.

Shelves

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or both. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones can follow your books.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?

With off-the-shelf shelving, you’re limited to the maker’s finishes. We paint ours in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand, to suit the room. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall normally ends with a gap, which fitted furniture avoids. It can use the full height too.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Why choose us

Questions we are often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in East Wickham?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near East Wickham affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you fit furniture for landlords?

Yes. Landlords and letting agents can arrange a design visit in the same way as anyone else. Access has to be agreed with the tenants.

Can built-in shelves be adjustable?

Some or all of them can be adjustable. A few fixed shelves keep the bookcase rigid.

How do you decide on shelf depth?

That depends on your books. Paperbacks suit shallow shelves, while large books and records need deeper ones. We plan depths around your collection at the design visit.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

The furniture is built in sections, sized for the route not just the room. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the measuring visit.

The problems built-in bookshelves solve

New owners of older houses often want shelving that suits the house. Alcoves and chimney breasts make natural places for books, and fitted shelves look as though they belong.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Shelves that suit a period room
  • Room for a record collection
  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files
  • Shelves that sag under books

If you live near Shoulder of Mutton Green, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

What to check before you book

  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • How parking will work on your street

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

How fitting day works

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it’s worth mentioning during the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. It starts when you let us know about the wall and your books.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. We make the shelving in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray finish is applied there too, if you chose it.
  5. The shelving is fitted, fixed and checked with you. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it’s best to load the shelves gently at first.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Starting with a design visit

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, use our contact form.
