Built-in bookshelves for your home in Falconwood

About our built-in bookshelves in Falconwood

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves help brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing as your books change. A mix often works best so the bookcase stays rigid and you keep some flexibility. If your home has low shelves children can reach and shelving that frames a window, built-in bookshelves made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

In an area like Falconwood, where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, many living rooms have been opened up to the dining room behind. That leaves a long room with a chimney breast on one side, which suits built-in bookshelves along that wall. At the design visit we plan any cable routes and ventilation the room needs, with any new sockets left to your electrician.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Built-in bookshelves in Falconwood: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 73% of the housing in the streets around Falconwood, with about 13% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 61% of households in the area around Falconwood, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier. About 73% of homes in the streets around Falconwood date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, which shape where built-in bookshelves go.

For a flat near Welling station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If your home is one of the older houses near Bishop Ridley Church, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

Fitting day, step by step

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it’s worth mentioning at the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You describe the room and what the shelves will hold.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with the shelf spans in mind.
  3. A written quote follows. Read it through and ask us anything.
  4. We then make the bookcase in our workshop.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted in your home, ready for your books. Everything is levelled and scribed to the walls as it goes in.

Before fitting day

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

For carcasses and fixed shelves, birch plywood gives a rigid frame.

Plinths and scribe strips

The plinth raises the shelving and hides a sloping floor. It can line up with the skirting.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

When you need someone else

Before you plan the job, it’s useful to know what we do not do:

  • Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job
  • Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Questions we’re often asked

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Welling station?

Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Falconwood?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

How long will the fitting take?

The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Can you build shelves over a doorway?

Yes. Shelves can run either side of a door or window and bridge across the top. It makes good use of wall space that typically goes unused and can frame a window seat.

Can shelves go around a radiator?

It is possible with some thought. The heat has to rise and move into the room, so we plan an opening or gap and never box it in. Some people prefer to keep shelves clear of it or ask a plumber to move it.

Why people ask for built-in bookshelves in Falconwood

Some want a room that works as a library or a study. A room lined with books feels different and can take a desk or reading seat too.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste
  • Room for a record collection
  • Shelving that frames a window
  • Storage for children’s books and games

For families living near Bishop Ridley Church of England VA Primary School, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
