East Wickham Bespoke Kitchens

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make bespoke kitchens for homes in East Wickham, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • More storage in a small kitchen
  • A central island in a larger kitchen
  • A painted kitchen in a colour you choose

The problems bespoke kitchens solve

A painted kitchen can be refreshed later, which appeals if you’re staying put. Hand painting is simple to touch in or refresh over the years.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Extra cupboard space
  • A central island in a larger kitchen
  • A layout for a small or tricky room
  • Open shelves with cupboards below

Close to Shoulder of Mutton Green? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?

Bespoke kitchens in East Wickham: what you get

Moisture-resistant MDF suits kitchens well, because it copes with a room that gets steamy. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. Cabinets are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in colours agreed with you. If your home has extra cupboard space and a kitchen finished in your colours, kitchens made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

Around East Wickham, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the original kitchen was probably small, and many have since been extended or opened up. The cabinets are designed for the room as it is today.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

What it costs

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Before the design visit

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll normally ask about:

  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Where you live, with the postcode

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Could you do it yourself?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Kitchens in East Wickham homes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around East Wickham were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 57%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 16%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. A conservation area lies within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of East Wickham, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Bexley has its own. If your road in East Wickham falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. We ask about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

For a flat near Welling station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. For an older house near St Mary the Virgin, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.

Fitting day, step by step

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the kitchen and the route in, including stairs, doorways and any lift.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the kitchen from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in pieces that suit the route in.
  5. We carry everything in and fit the cabinets, while your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in East Wickham?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Welling station?

Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room.

Which worktops and appliances can I have?

You choose the worktop, sink and appliances, and we design the cabinets around them. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

What materials do you use for kitchens?

MDF for smooth painted parts and birch plywood for drawer boxes and shelves. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in colours agreed with you.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

It is made in sections. At the design visit, we measure the route along with the room itself.
