Why bespoke in Edgware Bury?

Standalone bookcases cost less and you can have them right away. You can take them to your next home. Built-in shelves stay with the house and are made for its walls. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, which fitted furniture avoids. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Shelf depth depends on what you keep. Paperbacks need much less depth than hardbacks, art books or records. Too deep, and paperbacks get lost at the back; too shallow, and big books hang over the edge. Deeper cupboards below and shallower shelves above often work well. We make built-in bookshelves from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are shelves packed two rows deep and low shelves children can reach.

Around Edgware Bury, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the front room may have a bay window at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall, which decides where built-in bookshelves sit. Walls are often truer than in older houses, but they’re still measured carefully and scribed where they wander.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Edgware Bury

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Edgware Bury?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London, and Edgware Bury is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Edgware Bury?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Can you build shelves over a doorway?

Yes. Shelves can run either side of a door or window and bridge across the top. It makes good use of wall space that normally goes unused, and a window can have a seat or desk beneath.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, use our contact form.

Before and after fitting day

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Check the heights of art books, files and records
  • Ask your electrician about sockets early
  • Count roughly how many shelves your books fill now
  • Consider a mix of fixed and adjustable shelves

Leave a little air behind books on an external wall, to help avoid condensation. Look out for damp signs early.

Do not block the space left for radiator heat with books or objects. Trapped heat isn’t good for the room or the books.

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

Birch plywood carcasses make a rigid bookcase.

Spray-painted finish

Because the bookcase is sprayed before fitting, it arrives finished. Treat the shelves gently while the paint cures.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch with some details about where the bookshelves will go.
  2. We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
  3. We then send a written quote for the bookshelves.
  4. We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight.
  6. Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.

Getting ready for fitting day

Starting with a design visit

Advice

When is bespoke worth it?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
